I ve read some threads about this before, but i am still up in the air if the reward outweighs the work and cost involved. I want to do something with my airbox mainly because i ve read that you can experience better turbo response and better mpg's. I've done some looking and I like fords ais with the optional boot going from box to fender hole. From what i gather, this hole in the fender is what ford uses in their severe duty applications, so why not go that route , right? My question is.... Is the 300.00+ cost for this mod really going to make that much of a difference in performance? I try to save my $$$$'s for changes that enable me to recoup some of the initial cost. Is this one of them.Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks Bill
yea Matt I could do that, But I've heard so much about sucking cold air instead of hot engine compartment air. Would'nt just using the 6637 filter cancel out the reason I would be doing the mod in the first place? ( getting cold air) . I mean I dont know, Thats why I m asking.
I would look more into volume vs. Temp. The air your tubro is sucking in goes thru the intercooler and intercooler pipes before entering the heads.
The more volume of air you turbo can take in, the better and hooked up with a big exhaust the more faster you can get rid of it. Ever try to see someone with asthsma run 1/4 mile?
I went with 6637 for a few reasons. 1. Your not paying for "their" filter that only fits in "their" box. 2.i have the ability to make my own custom box and cold air intake. 2.i have the ability to make my own custom filter-to-turbo tube...all for the same or lesser price than what the other filter setup
Being able to build my own box and not have to use ''their'' filter would be a great advantage. You said that you would lean to more volume rather than temp, and that does make sense. However, I still have the factory exhaust,(-cat and the muffler), so taking in a larger volume of air would probably be irrevelent as far as improving anything, simply because I cant exhaust it as quick as I can bring it in? Thats one of my concerns... How much does it improve the overall performance ? If I have to go larger with my exhaust to have the larger volume of air increase the performance level, will I see mpg improvement ?
You will feel the difference with the new air/exhaust setup and you will definately hear both. Exhaust should be next on your list of mods. Just think ahead of all the possibilities you might be doing to your truck, otherwise you might end up redoing a lot of things when it comes to that time.
I went with the 6637 before exhaust. My MPG went to 19.98 as long as I keep the RPM's around 1900. Before I was getting around 17.5-18. This was figured manually, not by the lie-0-meter. I could also tell my performance was better as well, no HUGE improvements but better. I just put on my MBRP 4" turbo exhaust last weekend and you can really tell she is breathing much better!!!! Don't have my MPG yet though........ Great combo for you truck in my opinion.
Gives me something to think about doing. I guess I can't ask for much better mileage, I'm running 315/75/16's.That may be a big part of the reason . I did take it to fla. last year from just south of cincy oh, and got 17.8. I hear of guys getting close to 20 and I wonder why I cant seem to get more than 15 around town.
I bought a spectra brand cai from autozone, they matched summits price, if I remember correctly it was like 115.00 bucks. Looks like every other cia out there to me. Plus I did the zoodad mod the same time. So check out summits prices, I'd link to it, but I'm on my blackberry.

Thats great MPG and Im not seeing a chip or a tuner in your sig? I have never gotten that in my truck. Not doubting you just curious.

I don't think the AIS will help performance like you are hoping. The benefit is increased filtration while keeping flow at the level required. It's also a superior box design since the originals have been known to develop leaks where the upper lid seals to the filter media.
You can also call Riff Raff and see if they will sell you the Donaldson for less (they make the AIS for Ford...). Might be able to save another $50 by leaving off the Ford logo so you can have an AIS for $175 ish....
As far as benefit and real good filtration plus real good airflow, I went with the S-B. My philosiphy is I'm keeping my truck for the long haul so stuffing in new filters every 6 months or a year per my mileage was a no brainer to just get a CAI with a washable filter setup, oiled or not. A little overpriced, depending where you get it, Clay got them now cheaper than what I paid for mine back some time. Just my .2 cents
