I suggest picking a system and staying with it; don't mix and match brands. Sure, you can do it, but why would you want to complicate things.
Look for polyester base coats. They lay down nice and smooth, nib easily and are not fussy (you can work your way out of most problems).
I like Lesonal. Made by the same company that makes Sikkens but will save you about 25%. I sell both of them everyday, but use Lesonal on my personal projects.
Dupont's Nason urethane is an awsome single stage product for the price. Acrylic Enamel is not worth the body work involed in a paint job. 40 yr old technology that belongs in the books with laquer paint's. AE is cheap, for a reason. Thousands of old vehicles were painted with the AE, and MACO still uses it. I've used Dupont's Imron to their Chroma Base systems. Both are top of the line systems but are not "all that" for their price. The Nason urethane is the best value for the dollar IMHO. I painted my truck candy apple red 5 years ago with clear coat using this product and it still looks like new. You do not have to clear coat it, but I did. I wanted to wet sand and polish the coating.
There are other manufactures with the same type of material, PPG, etc. Dont put all your hard body work to shame with old Acryilc Enamel technolgy. I'll get beat by oldtimers for this oppinion, I'm sure.
