tranny questions

Well i just graduated from school and am moving to western kansas. i was pulling a 24 foot stock trailer with all my stuff in it, running 75mph and my tranny got hot. Tranny temp was 250 at the frame mounted filter. So im thinking about putting a deep tranny pan and a 6.0 tranny cooler on it now. i am looking at theDerale Transmission Pan Cooler or the Mag-Hytec Deep Trans Pan from Riffraff Diesel. Which one are you guys running and recomend. is there anything else you guys recommend doing? Thanks Justin

I would get the 6.0 cooler or a TruCool Max cooler and leave the pan alone. As far as I can tell, the only real benefit of the Mag-Hytec pan is to help stiffen up the transmission case from flexing under extreme high torque applications. I am not convinced that extra fluid capacity has any real benefit with cooling.

I never saw temps like that pulling my 29 ft 5th wheel at hi-way speeds until my tranny was on its last leg. And even then, I only saw them climb to 220+ when pulling a large grade. It still stayed 200 or less at cruising speeds & this was in 80-90 degree weather. When I got my BTS I got the 6.0 cooler installed & I haven't been over 140 since, but I haven't hooked to my trailer yet either.

As for the oil cooler pan.. Read this..

I'm thinking there is something else going on in your tranny thats making your temps run so high. Does your fluid smell burnt? Maybe a filter change/flush will tell you something...

I've been a tranny man since 1976, a cooler helps way more than a deep pan. Get that cooler right behind the grille opening so the air can get at it.

Its a steel pan, take it off & straighten it out. Change fluid at the same time.

My transmission builder sourced and installed mine when I had my trans rebuilt back in '06.

Dieselsite used to carry them but not any longer. I searched and found this one. I have never ordered from this place so you might want to look around some more and see what you find. They make two kinds so make sure you order the one without the thermal bypass.

transmissioncoolers.us: Tru-Cool MAX transmission cooler *No external cold weather thermal bypass
