Hey fellas, I changed my transmission fluid the last time and used the ATF and fixing to do it again but i talked to the folks at the dealer and they said to use Mercon V. Is it the same? Did I screw up? No problems yet with it. What do you guys recommend?
Can you guys still buy Mobil syntheic 1 ATF? The environmental ***** in California banned it because of too many VOC's. Not only did they ban it, they actually recalled it.
Will it hurt to mix 2 different brand names of ATF together like Mobile 1 syn and Castrol ATF syn? Both are Mercon V. I'm fixing to do mine in 2 weeks and the auto parts store didnt have enough of just 1 brand so I bought 2 different brands. Like I said there both Mercon V.

I think you are asking if it's ok to use Mercon V instead of Mercon III. If so, then the answer is "yes". You can use Motorcraft Mercon V in your transmission. At one time in the past, that was not the case but these days Motorcraft Mercon V is backwards compatible with the 4R100 trans.
FYI,
Mercon V is a Motorcraft product. No other brand can claim to sell Mercon V but they can say their fluid is Mercon V compatible or meets specs, standards etc. What those specs are exactly is hard to determine. I've searched around and it's still a bit fuzzy to me. From what I can tell...at one time Mercon V was fully synthetic but that may not be the case any longer. My guess is that Motorcraft Mercon V is a syn blend but again, I am just guessing because it doesn't say anything on the bottle about synthetic or not synthetic.
In the end, I ended up flushing my trans with Motorcraft Mercon V because it cost the same as other brands and I know where to get more if needed. If you decide to use something like Mobil 1, then make sure you pick up a few extra quarts just in case you are far from home and need to add fluid. I prefer not to mix brands if I can avoid it. It's probably ok to do so but it's hard to say unless you know what the difference is between them.

That was my problem as well. The auto parts stores didn't have enough of any particular brand. That's why I just went to the dealership and bought Motorcraft. It was about 5 bucks a quart, which was right about the same as the other brands.
In the years past, I changed my ATF at the beginning of each summer. This year I am going to try something different. I just took a fluid sample and will have it analyzed this week. If the readings come back ok, then I'll probably run through the summer and sample again in the Fall. A fluid change is over $100 so I wonder if I am changing too often or if once a year about right? I guess I'm about to find out. I'll post the report when it comes back.
k...If I remember correctly Brian said the syn trans fluid wasnt good for a stock trans
If he really did say that he's wrong. There is no reason (other than cost) not to run synthetic in a stock transmission. It is NOT more slippery than non-synthetic like a lot of people seem to believe.
