Heads ID

I bought a motor and other parts, the motor was to be a 302. After checking numbers above the starter looks like a 289 block it has 6bolt for the bell housing so it is a later 289. The heads inside tab by rockers have
5H18 on one head the other has 5J1. Any ideas on the type?Cant seem to find any info. Thanks

Flip the head over, there are #'s on the block mounting side that will tell the tale....

Thanks when I get back in town I will check. One more question does the three XXX in side the block have any significant meaning?

Thanks

The XXX is usually found on later 302 roller blocks.. but the letters themselves don't signify anything that I'm aware of. Block casting numbers are found down by the starter either on the side of the block or on a flat next to the oil pan surface, head casting numbers are found on the head gasket side on the bottom side of one in the central intake ports.

The Block had 5AE C3B Dont have any background on motor other it has been bored 40 over has new pistons rod not sure if they have had anything done to them. New lifters and cam,i still have to break it down to clean up some surface rust.

E7TE are the heads found on most 5.0 and 5.8 motors from 1987 and on so that combined with what you found on the block so far would seem to indicate a late model engine.

That cylinder block number, 5AE C3B, is missing the first letter. It might be a little weak or covered with dirt. It should be a C, D, or E.

I looked again and may be the other letter is an E still not real sure, i will be putting on a engine stand this week to try to get a better look. Now When I break it down it will give me a better idea what they did to the crank, also what cam. This motor was partly put back together after doing the machine work. Its to bad that it wasn't completely put back together so it has surface rust issues. But all and all I think I got a pretty good deal with all I got including T-5 7003-Z WC Trans. Not to bad for 3 Bills.

Okay... E5AE signifies a 1985 cylinder block, which should be a roller compatible block. The XXX marks in the lifter valley also indicate this.

The heads marked 5H18 on and 5J1 must refer to 1985 or 1995, but since E7TE castings were introduced for the 1987 model year, they must be 1995 castings.

Try using light oil on some fine emery paper to remove surface rust. Often the rust is insignificant and quickly removed by hand without harm to the machined surfaces.

Thanks for the info, along with the package I bought it had a Parker Webb intake, any thoughts on them? I still need to tear down motor and find out what cam they put in. One thing I do know , If anything that intake is rather large and might take a big cam to make it happen.I want a nice street set up not a radical go fast, well maybe a little fast. I am putting the motor in a 51 F1 with a t-5 and jag suspension, Carb and nice dizzy. Please inlighten me on a good set-up.
