My 05 was running rough and missfiring quite frequently. After much deliberation, I took it in for a diagnostic hookup. The dealer said my driver side cat was clogged. Lucky for me, I was just under the warranty period(79673 miles). I have had it replaced and I can feel a noticeable difference in the way it runs. Could a clogged cat have made it run that poorly or am is it just in my head that it is running alot better?
It really is running alot better i had an 06 that had the driver side plugged ford changed it made it run better for a little bit but started missing again i ended up changing my plugs and coil packs and it runs great now.
Not ready to do the plugs this year, but they are comin'. Makes me wonder, if the driver's side was plugged, maybe the passenger side is too. Now the truck is out of warranty, it just turned 80000 miles yesterday. oh well. On a lighter note, my wife and I looked at a 2011 Explorer yesterday. That thing is sweet!!
I also have an '05 which had the right side cat replaced under warrantee, truck has 33,000 miles on it. They also replaced a defective fuel injector (they've extended the warrantee on 2005's to 120,000 miles) which dumped fuel into the cylinder causing the cat to fail. Dealer told me to bring the truck in as soon as I feel it running rough, because it's likely to be another injector problem.

That Cat got pluged for a reason. Spark plug or coil failure can cause that. Just something to think about.
OG4: True, could be one of those things. I just hope it isn't crud in the bottom of the fuel tank. With this new mix of fuel I have heard that they have been gumming up fuel pumps and messing up injectors.

The notice I have is from August 1, 2008. It states in part " This program extends the warrantee coverage on the fuel injectors to 11 years of service or 120,000 miles from the warrantee start date of the vehicle, whichever comes first. Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners."
Vehicles covered by this program:
2005 F-150 Dearborn Plant Job #1 2005- Job last 2005
2005 F-150 Norfolk Plant "
2005 F-150 Kansas City Plant "
2005 Expedition Michigan Plant "
2005 Navigator Michigan Plant "
2005 F-Super Duty Kentucky Plant "
Reason for providing additional coverage:
"In some of the affected vehicles with the 5.4 3v engines, the fuel injectors may stick open or closed. This concern couls cause the check engine light to illuminate along with hard starting and/or rough running engine condition. I some instances, continued engine operation with a stuck open/ closed fuel injector could result in powertrain damage."
