Injector removal help?

I was reading up on the injector install and was wondering about the part about pulling the glow plugs? Is that necessary if I am not going to replace them? There was something about there not being a load on the starter w them pulled when turning the engine over to get oil back in the fuel rails.

Lots of people replace their glow plugs when they replace injectors just because it's a convenient time to tackle both items. Glow plugs aren't really that expensive anyway.
Riffraff Diesel: Motorcraft Glowplugs

If you aren't changing glow plugs, most of us normally remove then anyway because it helps ensure that all the fluids have been evacuated from the cylinders before we try and start up the engine again. It's too easy to hydro-lock a cylinder and damage something.

The process I use is to pull the back injector from each bank and let the oil and fuel drain out of each head. I then remove the rest of the injectors. I like to soak the injectors and new 0-rings in oil prior to re-installation to make sure the new o-rings aren't damaged during installation. After I torque down the injectors, I turn the engine over by hand with a socket and breaker bar. I get about 8 or 10 revolutions just to be sure. With the glow plugs still removed, I place the valve cover on the heads with a loose bolt and crank the engine over (with CPS unplugged). This ensures that I have no more fluids in the cylinders because anything left in the cylinders will be squirted out through the glow plug holes. It will make a mess, so make sure you use the valve covers to keep your engine compartment from getting sprayed. I then re-install the glow plugs and finish connecting up the wiring.

I always like to start the engine with the valve covers off just to make sure all the injectors are firing properly. You can see the oil discharge from the spill spouts of each injector. Careful when re-installing the valve cover (especially on the passenger side). It's pretty easy to knock the connector loose from the #7 injector solenoid. (little tip from personal experience...)

Ok now next question. I have the injector bolt pulled from the drivers side next to the fire wall it doesn't pull out easily. Am I missing something or will I need to "coax" it or gently pry?

I have a small ladies slipper bar that I use to pull them, you will need to pry on them just a tad to get them to come out. Just make sure the inj hold down isn't catching on the other hold down bolt.

You can gently pry....however, make sure the hold down clamp is unhooked from the upper bolt first. The clamp has a key slotted hole so it slides up and then releases from the upper bolt. The upper bolt does NOT get removed or loosened at all.

EDIT: Oops, too late. I didn't see Cory's response. What he said is good.

I has good luck holding the injector keeper up and in until the bolt is lined up with the key hole. Then prying on the upper side while still holding the keeper with my hand on the exhaust side.

Sounds good...just got back home going back outside to work on it some more. I was hoping for warmer weather today but I guess 45 will have to do. Can't wait to build my new garage. 1500 sq feet.

So I got the injectors out and the o rings look like a mouse chewed a few of them. That's good news for me because that means there is hope that it will fix my mpg and rough idle.

Got another question though. Do I need to purge the fuel and oil out of the cylinders before putting the injectors in, or can I do it after they are in w the glow plugs removed?

No need to clean the holes out. Just drop the injectors in then turn it over by hand with the gp's out. Then with the key and you'll be fine. Important that you torque the injector hold Down bolts to the proper torque!

Yep, I think someone told you to go get a torque wrench. I'm still scratching my my head about the power loss. IIRC you can hit around 30psi of boost. If my truck did that I would be looking over my shoulder for the cops. Not trying to hijack this thread, maybe David can start a new one.

Oh I will, just not tonight! I took Rick, Roland, and Barney for a ride in my truck tonight and to say the least were all a little clueless. Only thing questionable was the fuel pulse width and the accelerator pedal position. Enough already on with the injector reinstallation!!
