Injectors In! (formerly: Removing Injectors and then Installing Injectors)

Will hopefully be pulling my injectors tomorrow after work to send them to Jim. Gonna do glowplugs while I'm in there too. I know how to get to the injectors, what wires to remove, and how to free them up. I pulled them from my parts truck to sell to someone. Seeing as how my engine isn't going to the junkyard I want to do it right. What plugs need to be pulled and in what order to drain fluids in there to avoid seizing my engine up?

Just pull the back two injectors first let everything drain into them and suck them dry before you put the injectors back in

I never bother pulling any of the rail plugs. Pulling the back injector first will get most of the oil/fuel to fall in the back cylinder.

I know you got a TSC there in College Station. Run down there and see if they have this vacuum pump in stock. LiquiVac Large Capacity Oil Extractor, 8 qt. Capacity - 3000504 | Tractor Supply Company

That will make quick work of getting the fluids out of the cylinders. Then after re-installing injectors, fill HPOP rez and crank it without the glowplugs installed a couple times(with #22 fuse pulled or you can unplug CPS or even leave injectors unplugged. You just don't want the injectors to fire). Once you've done that, re-install glow plugs, #22 fuse, VCs and crank it up.

You'll be fine, just make sure you vac the cylinders good and crank it a couple times without glowplugs in it.

Y'all beat me... Stupid thing wouldn't post. LOL

wouldn't it be easier and better to do an oil change with the swap???...then the oli from the injector holes would drain into the block...just a thought...

when you drain the oil from the pan the oil in the oil rails in the head doesn't drain with the lower end oil.

Thanks fellas! When I crank it without the GPs in I should probably lay the VCs on the heads huh? Won't it spray oil/fuel all over my engine compartment?

So where does all that junk go when it hits the VCs and falls back down?

Yeah put the VCs on loosely. It's just oil and a little fuel that will blow out of the GP holes when you crank it. Remember, your vacuuming the cylinders out first, so there will be not be much fluid to blow out. The fluids will blow out the GP holes, hit the VCs and drain back to the oil pan.

Make sure to have at least 1 bolt holding the valve covers on.
I've seen the force that is excerted when the fluids shoot from the gp holes!

Injectors are out and on their way to Jim!! And I'm about to order new GPs from Clay.
I do have a few questions and probably more later about the reinstall.
Is there a drain plug for the HPOP or am I vac-ing it out the check hole?

When suctioning the rear cylinders am I running the hose down throught the injector cup?

Is there a certain brand of socket thinner than the others for getting the glow plug back down next to the injector?

Guess that's it for now. I'm almost little girl excited about getting em back. Thanks fellas!

Why are you draining the HPOP reservoir? It's the rails in the head that drain into the cylinders. I've never drained the reservoir when changing injectors.

In fact, after the new injectors are installed, you'll want to be sure the reservoir is full and then engine disabled (unplug CPS, pull IDM relay, etc.) and crank the engine over so you can start to re-fill the oil rails.

Sure. The hole in the cup or the glow plug hole will work just fine. If you pull the back two injectors first and let it drain, you'll have enough fluid come out the rails that it fills up into the cup unless the cylinder is at BDC.

Some are thinner than others. I use a Craftsman 1/4" drive deep socket and it works well. Use the socket to break the glow plug loose, then grab a small rubber hose that will slide over the tip of the glow plug but be snug. (the clear plastic hose from a can of great stuff expanding foam has a hole about the right diameter). The tip of the glow plug is small, hard to reach with your fingers, and covered in oil. Slide the rubber hose over the tip of the glow plug and twist it to unscrew the plug after it's broke loose.

Sorry, can't help you much here. Just don't get your panties all bunched up.
