Hey guys, I've been wanting to get the clear headlights for a while but don't really want to spend a lot of money on them. I found a pair on ebay for $50 with free shipping and that sound ok. The issue I have is I want to put hids in them but they don't have the piece in the middle of the headlight that goes over the bulb to prevent glare ( I believe). Will this be an issue or is it ok. I notice that several of them on there don't have this piece but others do. Anybody with these please let me know how they project light on the road. Thanks.
1st, these hedlamp capsules are not setup to run any kind of hid(theres other threads saying such as well) just some high quailty lights like sylvania silverstars in the stock wattage are are a great upgrade! . 2nd post up the link to the ebay link so we can see which ones your talking about. fyi you have to remove the header panel in order to install the new lights
The physics of it is very simple. The headlight bucket shape on your F150 is PARABOLIC. It projects light from the single focus point of that parabola. That focus point is where the small filament is in the standard bulb sits in the bucket.
The HID bulb has a long filament. It is designed to be projected from an ELLIPTICAL reflector bucket.
Putting the the wrong bulb in the wrong bucket reflector causes the light to be reflected in an unplanned direction. That is glare. Also most of the light is wasted as it is not reflected to where it is supposed to be.
Do not go with HID. All retrofitted HID is illegal for a reason. The optics are incorrect for HID bulbs.
Just get some good clear bulbs and some relays to run them. Oh, and make sure your lenses are clean or clear and not fogged up or yellowed. You will have a good amount of light then.
Good bulbs are not the blue tinted ones either. This includes Silverstar. GE Nighthawk (not sport), and Sylvania Xtravision are good clear ones.
If you just have to do this, then you really need to have headlights that have bulb covers. Something else to consider is that the most usable light and least glare or scattered light will be from 6k color temperature and lower.
18 bucks a piece for new replacement headlights from Rock auto with bulbs to replace my very, very, yellowed, almost opaque old ones. Good luck, Keystonepaul
