OK swapped in a 460 in my 79 Bronc, the motor is a 79 out of a F-350, 40,000 org miles. Everythings done(built, msd, centerforce, holly, L&L,etc..) been tryn to time it and still jacked up. Hit all 4 points... twice, moved the distributer all to hell. I have spark, carb checks good, no vacuum leaks, new edelbrok timing chain,etc... The timing light checks good its hitting the mark. Had it runnin fer 30 sec or so but was runnin at a high idle and backfiring, thinkn it was 180 out but still nothin. Everything has been double checked and still messed up. Little help.
Don't know what to tell ya. Spark and fuel and timing would indicate run condition.
Backfiring would tell me too much fuel. Is it possible that the carb is flooded? How is the choke sitting when you try to start it? Is the float set right? How about the needle and seat?
I think that the Holleys have an arrestor in them. I don't remember if it is Holley or Edlebrock. If the carb backfires, it can destroy the arrestor. It'll still deliver fuel, but it does something inside the carb. Do you have the right fuel pressure for the carb?
Also, I assume you double checked the plug wires. As in firing order? Not to be simplistic, just trying to help.
Just stabbing in the dark and trying to spark a thought.
Sure sounds like timing, especially the instance it did fire. Hopefully, your cam and crank timing gears are lined up. All I can suggest is find TDC for #1 cylinder on the combustion stroke and make sure the rotor is pointing at the #1 wire. If it doesn't fire, try moving the distributor gear forward one tooth. If it still doesn't fire, two teeth back.
Double checked the carb, I did blow the gasket on the intake and replaced it the got a different plate w/ a 1" spacer cause the intake was getting raw fuel. Hollys have a valve that prevents the power valve from burning, (Holly Truck Avenger 4bbl). Checked the plugs ad wires, yes their in the correct firing order (I was thinkn the same thing). As far as timing we set th balencer to 0 and pointed the dist. to #1 and since have been cranking the engine 180 to find the time and nothing. Seems that this motor hates to be advanced, it bogs down pretty bad.
As of now it seems 180 out and might have somethin to do w/ fuel. Like I said tried everything...well not everything it would be runnin then. Thanks fer the input so far.
bronczilla, are you absolutely sure you don't have the distributor 180* out? It almost sounds like the dizzy got dropped in with #1 on TDC of the exhaust stroke instead of the power stroke.
