My 72 bronco with 302v8, yes might leak a little due to the age of the motor, but ever since the changes i have made to it it leaks a lot. i added a eddlebrock performer intake , and a holley 650 4bbl. i have 2 pcv valves one in each valve cover, going into a T and then to the carb (on the advice of a friendhe makes it sound like he knows what he is doing) to constant vac. the enging leaks oil from somewhere . i think mostly from the dipstick entry point. and every once in a while either of the pcv valves will shoot out. poooooooost. u can hear pressure being released. so my question to all you fine people .. should i just add a breather element to one side of the engine or both .. this was the setup before all the changes . i think i will just add 2 breather elements and get rid of the pcv valves. are these neccesary due to the fact there is no other emmisions control equipment on the truck.
One valve cover usually has a vented breather and the PCV valve in the other.
You have created two blowout places instead of 1 incoming and one out-going vent.
I guess you would be leaking more.

I now have 2 breather elements installed. The both go into a T and then to the carb. i can tell the crankcase pressure is a lot less now. but sometimes the dipstick still comes out.. do they make one that screws into the block?
There are still a few leaks .. i am thinking about pulling the engine for an overhaul .. runs great .. but all those oil leaks realy are not good for my new 5k driveway
you only need 1 pcv valve. pvc valve in one valve cover then to vacume(carb in your case). the other valve cover should have a open breather cap. either a filter in the cap or a hose going to the air cleaner where it filters the air before entering the valve cover. the way it is supposed to work is the vacume on the pcv valve sucks air from the engine and the open breather on the other side lets air into the engine thus ventelating the crank case. without proper venting the engine builds up pressure and results in pushing oil out the easiest means of escape. in your bad oil leaks all over.
If changing it to only on pcv doesn't work than you might have "blow by", which is oil getting past the piston's (clearance problems or cracked ring). Borrow a compression tester ( screws into spark plug hole and uses compressed air). If it is not within specs, probably "blow by". Than it's time for a rebuild.
i think there may be some blowby.. engine runs strong however, and i have put all the money i can into it for now. getting it highway worthy and all( lights . windshield. ect. working brakes) i have a friend whom builds and rebuuilds engines. he happens to have one for sale .. dyno at 320hp. selling cheap . i will prolly buy that this spring.
also . what do you guys ( and gals ) think about an auto trans upgrade.. or would this be a downgrade. where would be the best place to find a new ( old ) automatic for this truck
has the 3 spd now .. i think 72 was the first year for the auto . i dont mind it . but if i could get one cheap enought.. i would do it proly.. what is everyone elses pros and cons of doing this .. and any personal opinions would be appreciated.
I also have a 72 that had the 3 speed. For strength reasons, I switched over to a C-6 and NP205 transfer case. Pretty difficult. Had to fabricate all my own crossmembers and all that. C-4's for Bronco's are few and far between. On C-6's, you can take a 2wd and change the output shaft and make it a 4wd. Not so with 2wd C-4 transmissions. A C-6 is a fine upgrade, whether you use a NP205 or NP208. You won't be able to use the Dana 20 any longer, though.
This thread is long expired. But, they do make a C6 to Dana 20 adaptor. And you can take a 2wd C4, swap the output shaft and install it in a Bronco. You just don't have the pan fill Bronco oil pan.
u probally got one of the problems i have mine leaks like the Titanic 2. i leak around the pvc valve and the dipstick. but mine is due to a old motor that needs to be rebuilt the rings are shot the oils gets past the rings and into the heads and cause leaks and excess pressure may want to look into that possability 2
Ya .. the rings are gone. has been running at least this long. and ive had pleanty of fun in the snow and mud. i already have a new v8 picked out for it. only 45,000 miles on it.
