need some help here, long story short, got shafted on an 86 F150, 302 V8, AOD.
Just had engine rebuilt. The AOD was kicking a little, but the truck sat for over 6 months. Last week had the transmission flushed and replaced with MERCON/DEX III. I saw the fluid in/out. But later on checked it, smelled burnt still, and not "hot pink/red" color. I've adjusted the cable per instructions found on several threads.
I drive it in D and only OD when over 55. However, runs great and every now and then it kicks when shifting, but does not slip. Does have bad shudder if I am under 50 in OD. and now I smell a burnt smell in the cab after driving, but not while driving.
1. Can I mix MERCON/DEX III and MERCON V (they didn't change the filter or transmission pan gasket) and I have a leak at the pan seal.
2. Did I misadjust my cable and burn up my AOD?
3. Is there anything else I missed and any recommended additives to my AOD?
OK first thing..... Are we sure that the "kicking" you're feeling isn't the engine missing? The shudder you could be feeling is the engine being bogged down by the trans, adjust the TV cable. If you can, set it by using the TV pressure tap. 0-3PSI@idle, 30-33@WOT. Prefrably do not mix the two oils. No additives please! I would pull the pan and inspect for debris next, then use a flush machine to cycle in new mercon V.
Well, got it where does not shift hard anymore, except when driving in sporadic traffic. The engine is not missing (had it checked), but rather the tranny is just very hard at shifting. I don't have problems if I keep a steady acceleration, but if I stop-go-stop-go, like downtown traffic or in a parking lot, it kicks really hard.
Had the cable adjusted, again, but now it only shifts hard after 40mph in OD, not as noticeable in D. It seems nonone around here wants lend me a pressure gauge, and not to mention I crawled underneath it and didn't find where the pressure valve goes into?
I did find out the smell was not coming from tranny, seems the guy that flushed it sprayed some in the engine compartment and the stinch is slowly going away.
Also, found a leak where the TV linkage attached to the area right above the tranny pan, is there a seal I need to change out to stop that leak?
If it only shifts hard in Overdrive, I believe that the early AOD's utilized the 3-4 accumlator. You may check it to be sure that its moving properly. If the 1-2,2-3 shifts are timed correctly, and don't seem too harsh, than most likely your TV cable is set close to correct. I would pull the valve body and see if it has a shift kit installed. You may even consider updateing to a later model valve body that eliminates the 3-4 accumlator and softens the overdrive shift in other ways.
