I need a little trans fluid for my 97 Expedition EB. The stick says Mercon. Can I use Mercon Dextron III? I have not been to the auto parts store yet but I have a bottle M/Dex at work.
Yikes! I would be very careful with this!! Hopefully some of the gurus (which I am not) will respond. I have heard that putting Mercon V in a tranny that needs Mercon is a big mistake. I have also heard to steer clear of fluids that claim that they can substitute for both. I only pour in EXACTLY what the manual calls for, transmissions are funny tempermental little critters and I do not experiment with them.
I've always used Ford only until my local store quit carrying it. I posted on here asking the same as you. After careful consideration and many posts later, I decided on Valvoline high mileage Mercon/Dextron. As of now, no issues and all good so far.
Junebug is correct on all accounts. I'm not sure of which way the incompatibilities go, but there are definately conflicts between the different Mercons. I also only use what is called for and Motorcraft fluids, but like ToolTime when I went to do my transfer case the Ford dealer had discontinued carrying the Mercon the manual called for. The parts guy said that the Mercon 5 they had would be unacceptable and pointed me across the street to Autozone. BTW I also save all my receipts, as a friend of mine in service said it goes a long long way if you have a premature failure of something that has been serviced. He has had customers get replacement motors with receipts, and had others get nothing without them.

I think the best thing to use is what's printed on the stick. The owner's manual sometimes is a little unclear, as I believe some years of the Expy came with one of two trannys (either the 4R100 or the 4R70W).
According to my manual (which only goes up through the 2002 model year), the 4R100 used the Mercon, while the early 4R70W's used Mercon, and switched over to Mercon V around 1998. The manual states in BOLD lettering that the two fluids are not interchangeable.
The shop manual also states that use of a fluid that indicates a dual usage (meets Mercon and Mercon V requirements) should not be used in an application that requires Mercon.
That being said, I think I saw something not too long ago (a TSB maybe?) that said that Mercon is no longer available so now those trannys can use the newer Mercon V.
Anyone else heard or seen anything to that effect???
I believe I read the same thing about Mercon possibly going away. Unless Im mistaken, I thought we could mix Mercon with MerconV, but not the other way around. Wouldnt life be nice if they could just make things easier and made only one fluid before now?
