I haven't had much luck with the cheap solid state regulators. I need to find a motorcraft one. Anybody out there have a decent extra one around?

This is the only regulator I use, generic pic but the cover comes off and the voltage is adjustable. My truck would blow headlight bulbs at 13.6v, I upped it to 14.2v and have not changed one in 2 years, And the batts stay up better of course.

I can supply them if need be, good auto electric shops should have them available.

Part No. F540HD

This site has the same part# for $25. Pretty sweet price for adjustible HD regulator I'd think.

I didn't try to X-reference it at NAPA or the like though.

Hey TypeFour-- Ever get dyno numbers on that sweet cam of yours?

That 25 dollar price is what I pay, jump on it and NAPA does not make one even close ..
No I havent got dyno numbers yet, BUT, Diesel Power magazine writer, Jason Thompson wants a cam for project 300 so I Am sending one and told him I need before and after numbers.

A local winding shop and boost your 1g up to 140amps no problem, letting you keep the brackets and original wires. Probably should change the wires to battery and reg though to a higher guage.

jbancroft, while local alternator rebuilders can indeed boost the unit's output quite a bit, why not start with a 3g which starts at 130a and i've seen upgraded 3g's sold as high as 250a. and they're internally regulated so we don't have to worry about those wires which are often damaged. the 3g from a mid-90s taurus 3.0 is a PERFECT bolt-up, requiring only wiring changes, which are easy. i think i've installed 4 of them in non-stock applications, with the first one being in the church parking lot on a friend's truck when his 1g died

the 100amp 1g. Works great. Put one on my truck and i can turn everything on and it still doesn't drop below 14 volts.

thats a good idea. what concerns me is not being able to use the alt guage when using the 1-wire alternators. Haven't figured out a work around for that looking on the site. Mabye I'm being too picky

i wouldn't worry too much about keeping the gage on it. i added an idiot light to my cluster like this https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...with-pics.html that thread is about an oil idiot light, but i use the exact same thing for my alternator light.
if you want more info from it, add a voltmeter

one gauge i never bother even looking at out of all my gauges is the volt gauge.
with the 3g alt,it's not even a concern or worry, and iv got plenty to draw such as e-fans,plow,dump bed, stereo amp etc.not a worry in the world about what the 3g is doing.it's one them of items like an idi engine.....not a common thing to fail on ya.you just know she's there for ya.
just do the upgrade jbancroft and all your concerns will be over.
scroll down through my e-fan write up (interested or not in those,no matter) and you'll see a youtube vid to help ya out too:
