Question HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR Recommendations

I need to boost up the amps for accessories on my 89 7.3. Any comments or recommendations appreciated.

My current one is going bad so time to beef up.

X2 on the 100amp alternator. This is the alternator which came from the factory on the F-Superduty Commercial Stripped Chassis model trucks. It is a direct bolt on as it utilizes the exact same case as the stock alternator for our trucks, which is a 70 amp I believe. This is known as the large case ford 1g (1st generation) alternator and is externally regulated. If you want some serious high output (like 140-200amps) look into the 3g alternators (which can be found on other ford vehicles and some of the later model IDIs - for example my 94 has one). The 3g alternator is internally regulated though.

Good luck

I will most likely be needing a new alternator in the near future. When I had all the belts off it, I spun the pulley and it made a squeak-squeak sound. On top of that, a buddy told me that it needed replacement. So, where can I get (100 amp should be fine), the part number and how much money should I save up?

Thanks.

there is a local electrical shop here in victoria, macs, that makes custom alternators. i think im going to hit them up for a 140 one wire if they can pull it off. that ought to power all my doodads and fun to come haha. ideally id like to just swap over to the 3g alt with internal regulation but wouldnt know where to start with wires, but my napa 100a is fine for now, ill try to score the part number off of it tomorrow.

So which way you'll go with this - 100-amp 1G or 130-amp 3G? Either way, do install a heavier-gauge cable between the alternator and the battery (or starter relay, same thing). Also keep in mind the 3Gs are supposed to pump out more amps at low engine speeds, so fi you spend lots of time idling you may wanna skip the big 1G and go directly to the 3G. Be prepared for a sticker shock tho, them 3G alts sure ain't cheap at all!

Well honestly, I just bought it and I have to go look at the previous owners receipts. I think he shoulda fired his mechanic cuz I think half the work he paid for wasn't actually done. (i.e. fuel lines, injectors, rebuilt heads, etc) But, the alternator looks relatively new. So I may go bark and flex a bit.

Originally, I saw 200+ amp-ers on google and really didn't shock me at all. (til I licked the wires....it's late.) I'm gonna go test it and see what I'm actually getting out of it cuz right now I'm sitting at 12.2-12.5 volts. So 10% variance +/- should tell me what it's got.

100 amp would keep my down time to a minimum. But I'm getting ready to throw a camper and inverter on it soon. So, it's still a toss up. I had a solar charger so I throw it up when I'm working and I haven't been stranded yet.

My former ambulance has a 165 amp on it and I would think with the power demands that thing had on it I can't imagine why you would need more, it charges both batteries up in no time, would be excellent with a winch set up.

That's what I was thinking too. I did some further searching and found the ambulance application. No mods needed I think.

You may have to change the adjusting bracket is all but otherwise no problem I think.

trucks before 92.5 (any pre-serpentine belt) should consider no less than the 3G alt upgrade imho.
they are not just higher power, like often focused on,but are more reliable/durable and more energy efficient than previous alts as well.
you don't need to buy new to have reliable 3g alt power.used are cheap enough,to carry a spare (but find a place for a spare if you want, out of the way good, cus it's likely to outlive the truck and never be used.)
