05 F250 6.0l Fx4 CC. All winter long (I live in Nebraska) my coolant temps were always running from 182 up to 190. Mostly closer to 182. Recently its been fairly warm here (60s to 70s) and my coolant had been running anywhere from 188 to 191 which seemed normal. BTW - at ECT of 190 my EOT is 200-201 just in case you are curious. Today the outside temp got up to the mid 70s and was humid. On my way home from work on regular city streets my ECT was varying from 188 to 202. I have never seen my ECT that high except when I was towing in the mountains. The EOT was always 8 to 11 degrees warmer.
Is this normal for my ECT to get that high on city streets in normal driving conditions? FYI - the truck probably never got above 2500 RPMs.
I wouldn't worry about it much. The fan should kick on high around 200-210, have you heard that at all? It might be worth verifying the fan operation if you know somebody with AutoEnginuity, or have it checked at the dealership.
The fan actually does not kick on at a specific coolant temperature (although it might seem like that in a few cases). There are a number of things that are involved w/ the PCM decision to kick on the fan.
im having the same problem around town also. i think its because its just getting warmer. although im doing a coolant flush this weekend to see if that helps.
I don't have a coolant temp gauge yet but Im investing in the edge cts just bought the truck a little over a month ago, but what I did do is hook up a highly sensitive psi gauge for refrigeration that will measure the coolant pressure. I teed it off of the degas bottle and ran the hose through the fire wall. Do you guys know by chance what I should be running psi that is? I have been running at between 5 to 10 or so on normal operation and 13 to 15 when I am pulling a trailer it just seems high to me cause isn't pop off at 16? My fan usually kicks on when the psi is around 10 and usually cycles on to keep it there unless Im pulling my trailer don't know the exact temp. (Yet)
