hey i got a filter someone pretty much gave to me that drops in the factory box. its a green cone shaped one that is washable not sure of the brand. i put it in and didnt expect anything but it really does seem to pick up quite a bit faster than it did with the stock. im worried about it not filtering good enough though from what i read on here. what do you guys think, use it or ditch it.
My only gripe with the factory filter is the argument we have EVERY FREAKIN time I change it. I hate changing that stupid thing. But I keep it because I have read (here) that it's not necessary to change it.

What's wrong with changing the filter? It's easier than cleaning a re-usable filter. Are you just upset with the cost? The stock filter lasts a looooooong time, I think most people change it prematurely.

I think sniggly was messing about being upset with the filter change routine, maybe not the cost etc, when said he had an arguement with his filter everytime he changed it.
Sniggly ... watch this video ... best 4 minutes you'll invest in your maintenace education, ever!!
Changing the filter by removing the entire assembly is really the way to go. You should be able to do it in less than 10 minutes. Changing out the filter element on your bench vice in the truck is priceless.
When I changed mine out, my intake housing had a pedestal molded into it for mounting a support clip for the MAF sensor harness. That bugger was giving me a little bit of problem by getting hung up on the under side of the coolant reservoir. Took care of that problem by getting out the dremel and and taking about an inch off the pedestal height. Can still mount the harness clip to the pedestal but it's not in the way anymore!
Also, I didn't change my filter out until 95K. Filter minder had barely moved and I didn't plan on replacing the filter until the filter minder told me to. However, I already had the filter assembly out when doing some other work (fuel regulator spring upgrade, thermostat change), so I went ahead and took the opportunity to change it.
From your post, it would appear you have a Green Air Filter. I posted on this subject back in 2006 and you can find the whole posting under Green Air Filter. I have extracted the followup I did on this back then and it was as follows:
I received the replacement Green Air Filter the other day. Also included was a Limited Warranty document which set forth the particulars of the warranty. This document was not included with the original filter. The following are the last two paragraphs of the warranty.
"The replacement of the filter shall be the sole and exclusive remedy to which Green Filter USA is obligated and to which the original retail purchaser is entitled. Green filter USA shall not be liable for any consequential or incidental damages of any kind resulting from the order or use of its products. These damages include but are not limited to reimbursement of the original purchase price, and any other special, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages.
Any defective Green Air Filter properly returned to the factory will be replaced for a handling charge of $14.95. Green Filter USA will not be responsible for any costs incurred in making the warranty claim. Any warranty claim must be sent at customers' expense along with proof of purchase. Green Filter USA reserves the right to determine if all terms of warranty have been met. Green Filter USA shall be under no obligation to honor this warranty." (emphasis added)
I placed a call to the CEO of Green Filter USA to get clarification on the intent of the warranty and left a voice mail for him. He did not call back. Given Green's warranty and failure to respond, I concluded I couldn't take the risk of having their product in my truck which has 2 years left on the Ford factory warranty. I ordered a new Donaldson filter last night. I suspect Green filter USA is an independent US distributor of Green Filters and is not a subsidiary of the manufacturer.
I couldn't chance a problem with this filter so I went back to the Donaldson and since they last so long, the Donaldson is not that expensive over its lifetime. As to getting more performance off the line and other ideas, I don't get much opportunity to drag race these days and my primary objective is to get from one place to another without running over some idiot in a little Japanese car who cuts in front of me. I would stay away from the Green Filter. Just one man's opinion.

I've got 150,000 on my 05 and 131,000 on my 06; I have taken them out and tapped then on the floor to see what would come out. The amount surprised me. I reinstalled them and haven' looked back!

I think it because you have to damn near take the front clip off to get the damn thing out!
