3.5 vs 6.2

I was having a debate with a fellow worker today, and i was thinking i would ask for the opinion of some fellow ford truck enthusiast.

Two identical trucks, one with the 6.2, other with ecoboost. Both have max trailer package.

1/4 mile race towing max rated trailer weight. who would be there first.

I would say it would be a very close race, but im thinking the eco boost might edge out the 6.2l due to the torque curve.

What are your opinons.

The 3.5L should because it has a broader, flatter torque curve and would pull on the 6.2 at gear changes.

Both would guzzle gas while pulling.

Ya i dont think gas is really the question in this though. More just which truck is better suited for towing.

The turbo should pull better and especially so at higher altitudes but lacking a eddy current dyno of both engines and shift points or a head to head test I'm going off of my judgment of torque curves and anticipated shift points.

Disclosure: I have a 3.5L on order.

EB down low, 6.2L the faster you get. So in 1/4 mile would only be a guess. Higher altitude will push in favor of EB at all speeds.

FICA: I slightly prefer a 6.2L but will be "forced" into a EB.

The thing of it is that Ford on their path of over-engineering the F150s, has the shift points set where the each engine can best use its available power. Given this, the ecoboost (EB) has a broader powerband than the 6.2L leading me to believe that the EB will tow the best.

Setting the torque issue of towing aside, the EB out drags the 6.2L as well which suggests that the moderate advantage of horsepower is not as useable as the available power of the EB.

That said, the 6.2L will "sound" cooler but if you're like me, then quiet is more desirable than listening to an engine drone.

However, the EB is available only with a 26 gallon gas tank, a thing that will require getting changed out to a higher capacity gas tank. In other words, the EB will annoy the driver with more frequent fuel stops that the sensible 6.2L owner who ordered the optional extended range fuel tank can avoid without further expense.

The problem is that no one can answer why the EB trucks only have a 26 gallon tank while all others have a 36 gallon tank.

Ii think the EB is going to surprise a ton of folks here and everywhere.

(Assuming Its Low Altitude)

I think that the EB would probably get the jump off the line, But I think the 6.2L's 50 extra horsepower would help it edge the Ecoboost out over a 1/4 mile. I'm not 100% sure on this, its just speculation. But the Ecoboost will have the clear advantage in high altitude situations.

The 6.2 has a 36 gallon tank? I didn't think they put 36 gallon tanks with a 5.5' bed. Also, the 6.2 needs a bigger tank over the EcoBoost with its 5mpg disadvantage.

In the 1/4 mile I'd probably put my money on the Ecoboost. Just because the Ecoboost beat these other trucks towing by 12 seconds from 0-60 and 1/4 mile isn't very long.

Since this is pure speculation, I'll say that the EB leads by half a truck length at the 1/8 mile and beats the 6.2 by a bumper at the finish. In reality the better driver would probably win the race.

Not that it really matters but the 6.2 was slightly quicker in the 0-60 tests and the other speed tests I saw run. Do a search they're out there.

Can you get the 6.2 in Max tow with the 5.5' bed? I thought max tow wasn't available on the 6.2 with the 5.5' bed.

IMHO The EB is a much better engine and you can get a real length truck bed with it. The EB is not getting anywhere close to 21 so looking at that the 6.2 is likely to be 11 city 14 highway at best.
If Ford wanted the 6.2 to be a decent option they would have used a DOHC 4 valve platform to help with efficiency.

The 6.2 2 valve is a dinosaur that reminds me of the early 5.4's technology.

I think it will be hard for an EB with crew cab and Max tow package to get 21 highway, but I think there will be some configurations that can do it. I was able to get 19-20 on a brand new Lariat crew, 6.5' bed, 4x4 with max tow package, while doing 75mph. Not bad really. Now when does this hydraulic hybrid F150 come out?

If we would have seen that kind of MPG's we would have ordered one for sure.
