Mileage thread

I thought I post new one.

87 F250 157K miles

3.55 with 4 speed manual 235/85/16

bought it got 11 mpg but that had tons of idle like 2 hours/ short trips/ tons leak injector caps.

Fix that

Got 17 mpg in city but have 1 serious injector cap leaky

Fix whole leak on injectors expect rear tank leak when it OFF.
18 mpg with hwy/city during rush hour.

Hope to see 20 mpg soon.

Most definetly!
I've seen only as low as 12, loaded up, go-pedal stuck on the floor, and riding the governor up hill.
My truck only weighs 5,700 pounds, and I can see from 16-20 unloaded. 16 on a "fun" day, 20 on a "behaved" day.
85 F350. Bone stock 6.9 including the crappy stock ehaust, 4 speed with no OD, 3.55 gears, 235/85R16 rears, highway tread tires.

Weight has a LOT to do with MPG's.

blueoval,
what did you see when you swapped the duals out for single?

my dually working truck MPG's are here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/g...odelName=F-250
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/g...vehicleid=1301

im getting exited to see what new injectors and summer fuel will do,especially after seeing the 3 or 4 leakers!
im becoming more suspicious of my ip's condition.

Hey, this is still relevant, how did you do that chart in the second link!?
I keep all my fuel receipts and write the odometer mileage on them.
The way I calculate my MPG is simple. I've got it integrated in with my expenses spreadhseet on excel. I have a column for odometer, price, gallons to the hundredth decimal (example: 12.54), and miles since last fill-up.
The odometer column I fill in manually, then price I fill in manually, and the gallons I fill in manually. I set up the "miles" column to automatically subtract the odometer reading from the current fill up from the previous fill up, which is the line above.
I don't take notes on my driving, as it varies daily and I've got too much on my mind to remember.
I'd love to chart all my mileage/fill-ups like you do. That would be sweet info to share!

The DRW to SRW swap....tough to say. It made SUCH a visual impact and I loved it so much I just couldn't keep my foot out of the floor. Well, I still can't. Why? When it was dually, I could drop the clutch and stand on it in 1st gear and get 'em going, shift into 2nd, and they would only roast if I floored the go-pedal and then dumped the clutch. Lot of fun! But with the singles, now I can let the clutch out in first regular, then stand on the gas and the tires don't stand a chance. Shift into 2nd, and they'll break loose again. I lost a lot of rubber on my rear tires the firt couple weeks of being SRW. Don't know why...!?
But I've noticed like a 1-2 MPG difference on average maybe? I don't really know for sure...my driving habits vary on an hourly basis lol But it's worth noting that trading 6 steel dually wheels for 4 aluminum wheels with highway tread was a great $200 investment. They're off a 96 or 97 F350 and just look sweeeeeet! lol

I think weight is a huge thing that gets overlooked. I had one tank that I got 23 MPG on when I was dually, but that was driving like half the speed limit and just wasn't a practical driving style for daily use. I haven't been able to do that yet as SRW. I'll betcha I can get up to 25 if I drive "maturely".

Another thing is your dump bed is acting like a parchute, unfortunately. That's a killer right there. A guy i work with owns an 04 F350 supercab dually 4x4 with steel dump bed with 6.0/auto trans. He gets 10 mpg on his best days, usually in single digits when pulling the tractor or skid steer... His killer is that the truck weighs a LOT and the dump bed headboard sticks out like 12" on either side of the cab, and the cab protector on top. They catch the wind and are a huge parachute.

For maximum MPG's you want to shed weight, get highway tread tires, keep them filled up with air, reduce any wind-grabbers you've got, and just drive accordingly.

F250, have you weighed your truck? Scrap metal yard or maybe a gravel yard with a scale?

just go to the garage here:
Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - Garage Portal
and click on "fill up vehicle".
add all records in and we can check out how your doing!

yeah,i know the dump is a killer.that's why im trying so hard to do things to offset it a bit.
proper timing and electric fans are going to help me get it bumped up a bit this year im hoping.i got a feeling them injectors were pretty bad as well.i think its safe to say,i can only go up from here.im not stopping until i reach 16 mpg avg. @ 14.63/44 tanks im not too far away.she may be there now with my tuneup and mods when summer fuel is back.
i still haven't gotten the thing on a set of scales yet.
not sure where id be able to strip a few lbs on her anyway.seems like i just keep adding lol.big heavy receiver hitch and now a rear fuel tank back in her. each just added recently, like last week.

did ya see my attempt at improved aerodynamics?
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ml#post9958829
i dunno if its gunna help or not.but i'll love having another tool kept it's own case anyway.
gunna hurt aerodynamics again though,at least a little bit.cus iv got to rig up a ladder rack on the pass side now.its good have everything out of the bed, less time and work unloading crap so i can just back up,swing open the gates and just dump.

Thanks! I'll start on that tonight. I'll only go back to my January 1, 2011 records and start from there. Sweet!

I did not see that attempt, looks awesome!!
If you keep doing little improvements, but do a lot of them, it should add up!

your welcome.
looking forward to checking your records! this will help us all,to know how things react with economy etc.
yeah.that's what i figure.not worried about those 5mpg improvements pill in the tank snake oil gimmicks.just keep plugging away,at what i think may gain me a half an mpg or so here and there,or even just a quarter mpg.
it all adds up big time with fuel over $4 per gallon now and 20k miles driven last year.
the way i figure it anyway though;
though the DRW dropped me 1.5-2 mpg or so,and the though the big bed drops me well below a stock bed,
what i save in trips compared to a stock setup f250 getting 20 mpg average, still isn't anywhere near my 14 mpg.
less time on the road = more time on the job making $.
less time on the road, due to making less trips = again, much less fuel consumed, saving $.
so comparatively,id need who knows how many mpg's from a stock f250 setup.it would be far more than anyone's even gotten thats for sure.

Just finished up with January, my second fill-up is really whacky. I don't remember it....but I must have added like 5 gallons of diesel from an old tractor on the farm or something, because 35 mpg isn't right...I think I'll modify it manually to just read 16 to keep everything else fair. During January we had one or two snow storms each week, so all the 10 mpg days include the average 6-8 hours of idle time plus travelling between accounts. The 5 mpg day was when the truck idled for 18 hours during the ice storm keeping my windshield clear.

And...mind you, the oil hasn't been changed since 105,140 miles....there are currently 119,531 on the ticker Hey, it burns a quart a week, so I just keep topping it off...

I just dug out my February records, time to go add those.

It's nice to see everyone's figures, great idea for the thread!

Finished with February. My books for March aren't done as it's not the end of March yet. But I'll gather up my receipts tonight and try to do my Fuel Records and post them up tomorrow.

I can say February had "some" snow. Not as much idle time as January, but with clear roads, there was a lot more WFOT

The January 10th record was a highway trip, 24.28 MPG.

I filled up yesterday, I'll try to keep my foot out of it for the rest of the tank
