If it's on the driver's side, it very well could be your lifters, since they're under that access plate. If they're sticking, some Marvel's Mystery oil can sometimes free them up.

If it's coming from under the valve cover, then it's probably your rocker arms and such that're getting worn out.

If you can't find a stethescope, try a length of heater hose. Plug one ear with a cotton ball or something so no extra noise gets in, and then put one end of the hose to your ear (again, muffle external noise as best as you can with the hand that's holding it to your ear), and then move the hose around the engine pay, pointing it at the exhaust, lifter cover, and take the oil cap off and put it down inside the valve cover. The noise'll get a lot louder the moment you're pointed at the source. Works pretty well.

Just be glad it's not coming from the bottom end.
Heya J

I found the stethescope and did my best to pinpoint the sound. I couldn't quite find the exact source of the sound. I'll get the old man to bend an ear to it as well. Truck seems to run fine for now.

Really?

That's the thing. I'm just not sure how big or small of a thing this can be. I'll know more by tonight.

Thanks guys!

I'd definitely find out what it is before I ever started ignoring it.
That needs to be an educated decision.

I agree. I want to know exactly what isn't working correctly.

With a recent oil change, you could of gotten air in a lifter and it finaly worked out. Had that happen a few times with my truck. Took about 4 weeks before the tick quit.

it could very well be a collapsed lifter or worn out rocker arm. Gotta find the source of the tick to be sure though

Dad came home. I shoved the stehtescope up his nose and told him to find the sound. After removing the skinny end from my eye socked he jumped into the engine bay. After a few seconds he grunted a curt, "It's nothin'."

"It ain't nothing."

"Just a couple worn lifters. Look, put it here and listen."

So the verdict is; my engine is getting TIRED. Just some lifters. No big deal for now, so the Auto-King says.

One thing he did say I had to frown at was he suggested using High Mileage oil next change. What's everyone's thoughts?

I don't have the money you do coming in, Wes. Remember, I've been out of work for over a year and a half. The smallest thing to me is a big deal.

Now, once I start working again, I'll give you a call and the three of us can give the 300 a nice rebuild with some goodies..

Go with the cheapest 10w40 you can find.

at 250,000 miles, you have to add a bottle of stp every oil change, to get to 500,000. your clearances are a little loose. I run castroil extended mileage 10w40 in all of my "older" motors, one still ticks a bit, but holds good oil pressure.
