I bought a 84 f350 with a 6.9 international for only $1000 and i want to know if i made a bad buy. it has 187k miles on it and the body, and interior is in amazing shape, with almost no rust. The bad: the block is cracked. he said he has ran it for 20k miles with the crack. it also has a misfire and it smokes blue. it also doesn't like to go into drive for acouple of seconds.
He first wanted $2500 then dropped to a grand when he told me about the block. What are my options here? im only 16 and make about $10 an hour, but i love the truck.
I will vouch for the 6.9 idi. Ive got one and it has yet to let me down in the year I have owned it. They are a bit underpowered, but very reliable. However, that crack in the block is gonna be a bit of a problem. I cant imagine that it made it 20,000 miles with a crack in it. However, I would say 1000 for an excellent body would be a good deal. Mine was 2500 and needed some work to become what it is today. I say find another idi and throw it in. They tend to be a dime a dozen. Lets see some pictures though.
10th Mountain! Climb To Glory! I am sorry but I have been "Rodded off the range" I have prematurely retired (medical but that is a WHOLE nother story). I haven't kept in touch with anyone up and they prolly all have bounced back and forth to Hawaii a few times by now. I don't know Bonds. Next time you hear from him, please tell him THANKS! LI is a crazy animal!

Explain "Crack in block". Where is it, how big, ECT. Early 6.9's were known to have a weakness around the block heater, so that feature should see very limited use.
Does it leak coolant and/or oil? If so, how bad?
As for the trans delaying engaging forward gear, just when it's cold (sitting overnight/more than 3-4 hrs)? If so, pretty common on the C6 trans when they get a lot of miles/years on them. I've had several that did this, some lasted for 7-8 years before I sold the truck, and I had the in my current truck last 6 years (after I bought it, already doing this) before it went out. $0.50 seal, that requires full trans disassembly to change. Drive it till it fails, then have the trans rebuilt. By the time it fails, the trans will be in dire need of rebuilding anyways.
As for the trans C-6 I concur that is a common issue. Mine did it for years pulling a 10,000# trailer. I had it rebuilt with a TransGo shift kit & Hughes HD Tow converter & it still does it sometimes now.
For a Grand I think you did OK. You have plenty of options with it. If it is truly a cracked block Napa sells a sealer that is ceramic that has been talked about on here in the past. Do a search I forget the name or I would post it. Maybe some one will know & post it.

I'll definitely make sure and tell him. And thank you, Copedawg, for your service. Hail, Hail, Oh Infantry!
