09 F-350 5.4L cyl's 1-4 misfire/ low power
Hey all. I'm new here. Just wanted to put some running symptoms on the table for you to see with my 09 F-350 Superduty. Its got the 3V 5.4L in it. The truck has low mileage on it, yet it does do a good amount of idleing. It began to exhibit multiple misfire code and misfire codes for the first 4 cyl's. Before i did anything, i tested the fuel pressure, even replaced the fuel filter too (fuel pressure was within spec. range, both static and running pressures), went through all fusible links and wiring harnesses to check for blown fuses, bad or broken wires and or inproper connection (found None) I tested all the cops (all tested fine, had spark, even swapped them to the rear 4 cyl's to see if problem moved) symtoms stayed the same. Next, looked at the injectors, actually flipped injectors from the front 4 to the rear 4 and visaversa, and removed the fuel rail to test their cycle (all worked properly, none were stuck open or not operating). While in the process of all this, I put new ford motorcraft plugs in with the correct gap. Still problem presisted on only the first 4 cyl's. I tested the cats for restriction or potential melting, by checking the heat levels and then actually losening the 2 bolts at each exhaust manifold collector to eliminate any ability to have restriction if the cats were to be clogged, (even this didnt change a thing, cats are good). Just to be safe i changed out the front o2 sensors and the catalyst monitor's...once again didnt change a thing. The truck idles rough as all heck, and while driving, immideatly bogs down to 1800rpm and only goes about 25-30mph even at WOT. There is a noticible pinging noise from the motor under load, my first thought...low octane/ water in fuel...and to be safe...drained the fuel and fuel lines, dropped the tank and refilled with fresh fuel. NOTHING IS WORKING!!!

checked cmp
well, correct me if i'm wrong, but there are two camshaft position sensors? right?? i found 1 sensor in each head on the front of the motor with a 2 pin connection in each one. Is that the sensor/s? if yes, then yes, i did look at them, tested them, both had the same resistances and to further investigate, i swapped them from side to side to see if anything changed. nothing changed. i would have assumed that if one or both of them had a voltage issue or out of range ohms that it would throw a code? and also if one crapped out wouldn't I see a problem with one entire bank 1-3-5-7 or 2-4-6-8?? i'm no expert on this motor, hopefully you can lead me in the right direction sir.

threw in the towel!
well, hate to say it, i gave up. We found out the truck was still under warentee anyways. Ford took a look at it and found the right bank had a bad VTC solenoid and that in turn caused the right catalytic converter to melt down. oh well, at lease we know now. Still surprises me that a vehicle with only 4500 miles on it would have such an issue. its a ford. thanks for your help guys.

unfortunatly My job requires me to troubleshoot and diagnose...even if the vehicle is under warentee due to the fact we have to have as many trucks up and running as possible for all our personell. We dont like having a truck leave the grounds for warentee repair, due to the fact the turn around time is hard to determine. job security right.
