I bought a stock replacment oil pan from mildon says it fits 64 and up 2wd ford truck for a 302 thats being put it a 71 f100. pan is a front sump, when I put the motor in the truck the drain plug hits the cross member and will not let drivers side motor mount all the way down. Is my truck supposed to be a rear sump pan or is the aftermarket pan just wrong? I looked at an 89 f150 with a 302 and it has a rear sump pan.
I suspect your problem lies with the bit of info that you didn't include here that you mentioned in another thread, which is that you kept the old engine perches in place when you dropped the 302 in. If the original engine was an FE, then I don't think it's going to fit right. Several years back I put a 351C into a '72 using 302 perches in place of the original FE perches and it was a perfect fit, and is front sump. The 351C uses the same motor mounts as a 302 or 351W and is a direct swap for those motors in just about anything it will physically fit into. Get some smallblock perches and I suspect your problem will be solved.
I'm not really clear on the different perches used and hopefully someone will come along who knows more about it. I've just been reading some conflicting info and it appears that there were three different styles of perches. The FE and Smallbock perches are supposedly interchangeable, just that the FE perches will make your 302 sit one inch higher in the truck...that info certainly conflicts with what you're experiencing. Or perhaps you have 460 perches in there now...? Though they're really quite different from the other two...
I was told by the previous owner of the truck that a 302 was in it before, truck came with a c6 tranny that has the smaller input shaft and I already bolted to the 302 so I beleive I have perches that will work (motor fell right in place on install both mounts like it was meant to be), I'm thinking the aftermarket pan is deeper than stock But I have no idea how deep a stock front sump pan is. Called jegs about it and they offered some rear sump pans that naturally were about $200.00 more than what I already spent. I can't justify to the wife the need for a 300.00 oil pan! Thanks for the comment back any help is greatly apreciated. Would post pics of all this but not sure how.
Then maybe try the FE perches, they should still bolt to the 302 but raise the engine an inch higher according to what I read. But you might then have driveline angle problems.
I put a rear sump pan on mine it will work.Look for a van or truck 80 and up with a 302 there rear sumps and the pick up tube and dip stick. On the frame mounts 302 and 351-400 modified use the same perchs.

Otherwise, go to a stock pan...
I thought I ordered a stock replacment pan so I'm not sure what stock is

thanks for your reply if anybody could tell me how deep a stock front sump pan is that would be great.
I put a few pics of the motor in my garage will put one in there today detailing my problem my garage is the only place I can figure out how to post pics.
pics need to be on the internet somewhere (Flickr, photobucket, or your own website) then in the advanced message editor select "insert image" and type in the web address where the image is stored. If there is a way to do it directly from the hard drive on your confuser I haven't figured it out yet.
Sure would appreciate someone letting me know if there is a way to do that; I'm currently FTP'ing photos to an unused folder on my site so I can insert them here....
Yeah, about that...I haven't had any luck with attaching photos. It took a couple tries to even get an album loaded. But, riddle me this - if it did work, would the pics show up in the body of the message like they do when you use the 'insert' function?
Yes, they do. Only thing I've found that's a PITA about it is that you can't add any text after the attached pic. The pic is tha tlast thing in the post. I can live with that however.
But as for inserting pics from elsewhere on the web, I just use HTML [img] [/img] tags with the URL of the pic in between them. I usually have them hosted on Photobucket or Webshots, and using the HTML tags gives me lots more control over where and how they're placed in the post. I use that more than attachments anyway. It's just that attachments are generally quicker if the pic is already on your own computer. (Or confuser...I like that!)
Just tried to attach a pic using the uploader...still not working.
so what about the pics in my garage can they be inserted or do they have to come from somewhere else. As far as the oil pan goes I think I found one for a 1980 van/truck thats rear sump that will work thanks to Bmuhlbach
If you already have the pics hosted here on the site you should be able to copy-and-paste the URL for the pic here in a post and put the HTML tags I mentioned earlier before and after the URL, then the pic should show up here. So it would look something like this:
[img]URL of your pic goes here[/img]
And if you get a rear sump pan, be sure to get the pickup tube that goes with it.
EDIT: Here are a couple of your pics from your garage:
That Milodon pan looks bigger to my eyes than the stock factory front-sump 302 pan. And part of the problem may be the drain plug location. A stock 302 oil pan has the drain plug located more on the side than on the bottom, so even if the pan is the same size it wouldn't have the interference problems that you're having. Check his one out:
I agree it should have come out the side the picture of the one I ordered from Jeggs showed it to be on the side but as you can see the one they sent was located on the bottom and hung down more than an inch I paid 109.00 for it to. I called Jeggs about it and they said the photos don't always match the actual part number???. My motor is an 85 that must have come from a truck or van it had the dip stick in the block I never had the pan though. Ive been on this thing for five years, once I finally got it together all the info I could find pointed to front sump so I drilled a hole in the timing cover to be able to get a front sump dip stick now Im told rear sump. I do have a rear sump pick up so not sure what the best thing to do is at this point. Jeggs said they would take the pan back even though it was purchased over a year ago thats about the only good coming from this so far. thanks for all the help so far.
