shock mount placement

Going to weld new spring perches and shock mounts on my 53 with ford 9". New shocks are already on the frame. When setting the mount on the rear housing should i pull the shock out about 2" and set the mount there? what is the procedure? Thanks

Your close! I like having 3" either way. A 3" bump and extension is pretty standard when setting up shocks. Keeping your shock angle around 25-30 degrees helps their effectivness.

Agree, you should have at least 3" of compression travel and a bump stop that mechanically limits the suspension travel to ~ 1/2" less than that. You never want to bottom out the shock before the suspension, a sure way to destroy the shock.
