I called NAPA today looking for a steering coupler, they told me it was a weird one and that didn't couldn't get. Gave me the part number 31004 and told me to call bumper to bumper. So I did and turns out it's $70. It should be the whole assembly and not just the disc's at this price, right?
cheapest fix is the HELP kit/NAPA kit with the rubber and hardware..........$12
you reuse the hub to the steering gear and the column, just new rubber and hardware
it's easy to repair, and includes instructions and fits almost everything with a rag joint
Don't waste time and $ on that coupler!!
Get a splined unit and weld it on. The reason you need to replace it is because it sucks and it fails. Go with a joint and never look back...

And that works perfect for those of us with no access to a welder....
Ill tell u what I did on my 78 I took 2 steering shafts cut them down welded them together n I still have the slip part that's functional to be able to take it apart if I need to takes about 20 min to build one
So I was talking to my father last, he told me last when he was driving it(5-10 years ago), he had two mechanics say it was the steering shaft. Said he could flip and have tighter steering in straight aways but lose in the corners.
He said it wandered on straight aways but was fine on corners. Does this even sound like a rag joint problem? Kind of hard up for cash right now and don't want to spend $70 on the rag joint then find out its the shaft.
I bought a generic Ford kit at an auto parts store help section for like $7.70, worked fine. My original one did fail..........after 30+ years. All you need is the rubber part most likely. Get someone to turn the wheel side to side and see where the play is.
