Well, I was going to put a 302 in my truck this summer, but now i'm gonna put a hurry on it. My clutch on my 3-speed took a dump last weekend and i'm not going to put any more money in it so I can get a new engine. My question is, I would like to have an automatic instead of manual, so what would be the best? Like best mpg and durability. Don't get me wrong, i'm not climbing mt. everest, but I dont' want to change it next year. Also, would it just bolt up to my transfer case? Or would I have to get a new driveshaft from the tranny to the transfer case? And my next question, the 3 on the tree lever is still there, any chance I could just use this or would i be best off to just swap out the column and put in a new one? Thanks guys.
P.S. Would it be best to buy the tranny/engine as one or get htem seperately? Thanks!
The possibilities are endless. Just the thought of swapping engines brings up a myriad of questions regarding availability, fitment, fuel consumption, reliability, accessories available, etc, etc. I would recommend deciding what it is you want from your truck once complete, and sticking to this plan. Find a donor with the engine and trans you want and rob as much stuff as you can off it before selling off the rest.
I personally decided to install a 351W with an FMX trans. First, it was available, 2nd, parts are available for the 351W from almost everywhere since almost all trucks from the early 70's came with them. The trannies available are C-3(leave these alone, light duty junk) C-4, FMX, C-6, and Aod are all good. The AOD is an overdrive trans that will be and easy install as well as improve the fuel mileage and lower the revs on the highway.
Good luck in your search and keep us posted on your progress.
Thanks krosati,
I want mostly a good running engine with somewhat decent mileage. However, I don't need stump pulling power, which is why i am going with a 302 and parts are readily available for it anyways. I am probably going with the AOD according to the replys. I plan to put a cam in it, intake/carburator(sp?) and my uncle knows how to do head work so he said he can get it some decent power. I'm looking for one right now that is running, but if I don't have one within a month i'll prolly be heading to the yard. Thanks for the replys again guys!
If you can't find the combinations you are looking for go to www.advanceadapters.com and they make several different adapters for tranny and t-case combinations. Advance Adapters is a good reliable company so check em out.
