I like being able to mix and match a salad grabbed right out of the planters!
I want a serious bunch of above ground planters one day, with greens in a few, root plants in others, and so on. It makes me wonder what the back deck could really be - if I planned it as the nexus of a series of garden paths.
Spices to the left, herbs to the right, salad greens straight ahead... All right close to the kitchen door.
Dad planted a leaf type of lettuce, he really liked it, I kept herbs in pots to use for my kitchen creations, I'm missing them now, looking to buy a planter for my spare room.
I was going to plant lettuce in September, but didn't get around to it.
I did bring my herbs inside: basil, golden oregano and English thyme. My Sage, Rosemary, peppermint and spearmint stay out side all winter....never had an issue with them dying out. This gives me fresh herbs all winter. I'll put them back outside in the spring and plant some more as well.
I've almost got all of my front garden tilled back under. A few piles of old vines may need to be burned first but the plan for next spring is already materializing
There are at least five random heads of lettuce that I had to mark with stakes to till around them. Some of the seed obviously drifted here and there...
I also have some barrel halves with root plants growing in them. Radish, beets, carrots, and hopefully onions. They should keep underground over winter and do better next year
