Ran into a good deal on 'mater plants....the local Lowe's apparently ordered WAAAAYYYY too many "Better Boy" 4" potted tomato plants. By the time I entered the store, they had sold about 1/2 of them and still had about 1000 plants left...tehy were selling them for 50 cents each. I bought 10...put 3 into the last space in my garden and the other 7 into containers.
Dad's having tiller issues, he changed the oil, now it quits when he puts the tines in and it has a load, could be a oil sending unit issue, worked great last year when he bought the engine and installed it on the Troybuilt machine in place of the Tecumseh.
If I could afford it I'd take it, I'm wanting to start camping.
He put a Honda on it, can't beat them, but wants to rebuilt the other, iron cylinder heavy duty engine, I may take a crack at it when I'm done with my Maytag.
His Tecumseh piston broke up, might need to either replace the cylinder or get it bored, then put a new piston in it, weighs twice what the Honda replacement does, and it's a cast iron cylinder commercial version too. He filled the transmission as I suggested and it's back in action, I should really get on to him for that as he changed the engine oil only.
Just finished culling and thinningmy lettuce....have enough fo 3 or 4 good-sized salads. Also have some blooms on a few tomato & pepper plants. I think my water barrels will be full by this time Monday. I added a third barrel to catch the overflow from one already connected to the gutter....simple hole and hose set-up. Cucumber plants are also growing nicely.
Have a lt of lettuce still going strong. I have several tennis ball and golf ball sized tomatoes that are green....probabaly won't be ripe for a couple weeks. I have some peppers that should be ready to pick next week and have picked 3 cucmbers. Many of each hanging and ripening. Should be a fairly decent year for all.
Wow, that's great Mac. My tomatoe plants aren't near that far along. Probably 1 foot high now or so. Found one volunteer roma plant from last year. The rest are big un's. Total 28 tomatoe plants in all. Finished up the garden last night with one tabasco chili pepper plant, a bell pepper (test case) and 4 cucumber plants.
I stayed awat from the cages this year and put up some lengths of dog fence for them to climb on. Giving that a shot also as a test case. LOL.
The whole garden is inside the dog lot and fenced so hopefully no varments. Didn't have a problem last year but I only had 13 Roma plants. This year we expanded.
Well my cucumbers are growing like mad, the 32 tomato plants are growing pretty good and 4 of the "on the vine" ones have 8-10 large fruit on them. Basil is super large and already pruning it somewhat, peppers are growing just a tad slower than normal but we used seeds to grow them, so could be stunted.
Wow! Sounds like there are more gardeners around than first thought. That's great! I forgot to mention my herb garden...I have sage and rosemary that I just cut back some in the fall and they keep growing (both are perennial). I planted 2 more varieties of sage and one of rosemary to see if they are as hardy as the ones already there. I also have some thyme and regular & golden oregano. I also planted fennel, French lavender and 3 varieties of basil to go with the bee balm and echinacea (purple cone flower) that are also there every year (they drop their seeds and re-grow each year).
BTW, I plant a couple of each variety in containers and bring them in before the first frost...had fresh basil, thyme and oregano all winter. The sage and rosemary stay available all winter too.
Ace Hardware is selling all their vegetable plants 50% off this week. I bought some more tomatoes and peppers and planted them in containers for some late-fall harvesting. I'll get some more in a week or two and plant them in more containers that I can move inside for early winter fresh 'maters & green peppers.
This recent rain did my garden good----got 3 banana peppers, 2 jalapenos, 4 carrots, 8 cucmbers and some more lettuce last night. Fresh salad with the baked cod and rice made for a nice dinner.
Greywolf, Angel Food Ministries is selling it in it's package deals, they are an affordable place to buy from and the food is terrific, I've never had a problem, their steaks are quite tasty and tender too.
