I am trying to track down a deflection issue in my serpentine belt between the alternator and the ps pump. I pulled the belt off and I was checking the pulleys. I notice that I have about 1/16 of an inch of play in and out on the pump. I assume this is not normal and possible cause of the deflection issue. Rock Auto has a rebuild kit for pretty cheap but not sure I would know what to do w/o some instructions. Anybody seen a write up on pulling the ps pump and rebuilding it? I replaced the tensioner and idler pulley a little over a year ago. Everything else look normal to me. Any tips or guidance would be appreciated.
That play in an out is normal.... Every truck I have worked on has it.
As for your question, sorry, I can't be of any help there.
Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll just carry a spare belt. I don't know what else it could be. Everything checks out ok. Anybody else notice deflection between alternator and ps pump. It smooths out in high idle.
I was messing with the truck and noticed when you turn on the ac the deflection smooths out and returns when you shut the ac off. Why would putting the extra load on the engine make it smooth out.
Have you ever replaced the tensioner? They wear out and are tough to see that they're bad until you have them on the bench side-by-side with a new one.

Yes I did replace the tensioner about 10k miles ago. I'm thinking it might be bad again. I didn't get oem. I got one from O rieleys. I was getting the same deflection on the old tensioner and cleared up with the new one but now it's back again.
It turned out to be a bad tensioner. I guess it could of been one of the bearings in the pulleys but they seemed decent and only had 10k miles on them. They gave me a new one for 20% off. It's made by gates so you would think it would be a good part. I'll probably be doing the same in another year..lol.. Thanks for the help guys.
