i know there are already many threads on this subject, ive looked at them many times but cant find my answer so here it goes. i have a 72 f100 i cant for the life of me get my dash lights to work. the blinker arrow lights work and the bright light indicator works, but the lights to illuminate the instruments do not. ive replaced all my bulbs and put in a new headlight switch, neither one worked. if anyone needs a headlight switch mail me, il give you my old one (which apparently was not the problem) for postage. any way i cleaned all my contact surfaces on the circuit board and on the light plug ins, no help there either. one thing that has me wondering is that when i put my test light on my wiring harness contacts (with the key on and the headlight switch on) only the 2 on the top right and 1 on the top left light up, shouldnt they all be hot at this time? any help would be greatly appreciated
I once wasted a weekend pulling a freshly overhauled 3.8L Buick engine and tearing open the front end of it due to a 'crank but no start' because I assumed the cam install had been messed up.
The problem turned out to be a blown fuel pump fuse. Good reminder to always start at the top of the troubleshooting list.
I had the same problem on my 72 I changed 2 headlight switches still didnt work. Changed bulbs and fuses but still didnt work. I replaced the circuitboard and everything worked again. It is sometimes hard to see burt circuits with the naked eye. I found a used one on ebay 25.00
when i got my 68 , it had no turn signals, dashlights , brake lights, just about everything . i took it all apart and checked everything with my meter . fuses were good but power wasn't getting to anything . so i took all the plugs off the switchs , cleaned the contacts and put them back together . some stuff started working , so i pulled all the conectors apart in the wiring (one at a time) and cleaned them. everything worked ! i guess the contacts built upsurface corriosion and it was just enough to stop the flow of electricity.
If there is a small break in the contacts the lightswont work or other items. The circuit board (printed) isnt that much. Its best to replace it than fighting with the old ones.
