Last night the starter on my 1990 F150 (4.9 six)got stuck. It just kept going and going, even after I took out the key. It finally stopped and I drove it home and parked it. What could cause this? Where should I look? Any help would be appreciated. Please email me.
Probably the starter solonoid on the fender. I hear they are prone to sticking in these years of trucks. My mechanic suggested to get one for an old mustang or something because they are of a better design or something.
I had a similar thing happen a while back, only it was with the new (warranty replacement) starter. It had me AND the guys at NAPA baffled. I never (really) figured ouy WHY but the fix was to put a washer between the starter and the bell housing(on both bolts, after they are through the starter), suggesting that the "new starter " had to long a "nose piece". There was a LITTLE bit of wear to indicate this but we measured it several times and it appeared to be the same starter. No problems since.(
