'68 3 speed OD in a '66 with a 240
Just curious if anyone knows if this is a hard transition, or easy. I assume the drive shaft may have to shorten. Other than that is this a bolt up? Will the column linkage just hook up? Should I steal the linkage from the 68?
I really want the OD, and I found a guy who is pulling a 240/3 speed OD out of his '68 for a crate motor, and an E4OD. Good opportunity to get the OD I would like to have.

You will need all the linkages, wiring harness and switches from the donor. And the linkages may need to be modified.
The drive shaft will need modifications.
And a learning curve on how it operates so your truck does not pass you in the parking lot after you get out of it.
There are much better and easier ways of getting overdrive than the outlawed in 72 unit.

What do you mean by this?

Isn't this the same unit they would have put in my '66 if it had come with it? Why was it outlawed, and how can I verify this is one of the outlaw units.
The guy I am talking to about this says it has a cable activated not electric. Does that change your opinion of it at all?
One of the big things for me is to keep the 3 on the tree, so what is a better/easier way to get over drive with that being considered. I need to accommodate a baby seat so a 4 speed floor shift is out, and I am anti auto, anti modify other than what was possible in 1966. I am a near purist when it comes to my truck. If I want a new truck, I just get out of my 66 and climb into my 2010.

IIRC, the problem with some old ODs was the "freewheeling" feature. If left in OD, "freewheeling" could result in vehicle rollaway, as it's just like being in neutral.
Check bell to trans pattern and depth.
What type of trans are you pulling out?
The BW transmissions used with OD are non-synchro first gear you know.

My truck has Trans = C Ford Type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission That was according to Number Dummy's translation of my Warranty plate. I have no reason to question it because very little was modified on this truck.
As for the roll away issue, I have trust issues with my truck so I am really good about applying the Emergency Brake.
I just want the higher top end, without losing the 3 on the tree.

No OD exists for a C4. Gear vendors makes an OD for the C6, DNE/ US Gear made a OD for the C6 also but there getting rarer and have zero parts support.
Install a AOD in place of the C4.
In 72 Federal Statute prohibited the use of freewheeling sun type planetary over drive gearing as the truck can be in gear and the OD engauged allowing the truck to roll away. The weight of the truck can over power the emergency brake also. You need to be protected from yourself.
There a multitude of options. the best being for the 240 is to put small block ZF 5 speed that was behind a 300 or 302. Millions of them out there and gives a .69 OD.
Largest issue is the hydraulic clutch which in not a real problem to install, just add the resivor/master to the firewall and revise the linkage.
Other options are the TOD (top loaded oerdrive) from mid eighites F series that was behing the 300 or 302. it is a aluminum case four speed trans with fourth being a .70 overdrive. You will need the later small block truck bell housing, and it can be scrounged up with the transmission. Avoid the SROD (side rail over drive) as they are from granads and cars and puke gears under torque.

Garbz,
I considered the later transmissions before I bought my truck, and then my wife had a baby, now I need the column shift to accommodate a baby seat. So a floor shifter is not an option in the foreseeable future. Plus I like knowing I drive a truck that few people could steal. Most wouldn't know what to do with a 3 on the tree.
JoWilker,
I actually am impressed by the guts of this ole 240. It doesn't compare to my 2010 F150, but it's no slouch. I was going to rush and replace it, but it has good compression, and the only issue I have is it sounds like it will come apart at about 70 mph. I don't need to go faster, just hate to abuse a good truck unnecessarily.
