When I go to start my truck, the glowplug light comes on, then goes out (1-2 seconds) at dead cold.
After which I get a series of clicks, no light, the interior lights flicker with the clicks, but even then, it doesn't start as easy as I have seen on other trucks with the same equipment.
I've been thinking it's a glow plug issue, but I'd rather base my purchase on outside opinions from those more into the knowledge of this than I.
Hello, I just picked up a 87 6.9 and it does the same thing. I turn on the key and light only comes on 1-2 sec and the controller starts clicking. From what I found that is the controller telling me I have bad glow plugs. I am not sure of the accuracy of the info so I will be testing my glow plugs soon. It sounds reasonable because my truck is a little hard starting (about 20 sec) when cold in the morning. But when its warm it starts instantly.
The controller is cycling fast to save the last few glowplugs. Replace the daed plugs and the controller will cycle normally. To test the plugs hook a test light to the + side of the battery and pull the conector of the plug and touch the light to the plug if it lights its good. Remember only use motorcraft glowplugs

I hate shopping at O'Reiley's, but they are the ONLY one's in town that have ZD9 plugs.
I'm aware of what happens when you don't install ZD9's.
i got a new controller and relay, now my wires r falling apart going to the glow plugs along with the connectors. i fixing the wires today and where they connect to the glow plugs . 90 f350.
I tested all my plugs exactly as 84-6.9L said to, take his advice, it worked, 4 of 8 were dead, replaced them, the light stayed on, controller worked, and she fired right up.
