Whenever I pull up to a red light, I always put the my 2wd 390 AT into neutral. Pressing the brakes down firmly and shifting into Drive, the truck always knocks, lunges up. Sometimes more noticeable than other times. Less when its warmed up. Is this normal? Could it be my engine mounts?
the motor mounts. Stand off to the side of the truck while it's running, hood open and have a bud work through the gears...just like you're at a light. If it jumps up or down, check the mounts. Why do you slide it into N there...does it want to die at idle?
It idles fine. Just put it in neutral as a habit. Used to have overheating issues in the summer and by putting into neutral increase fan speed. Thanks, will look into the mounts.
Hey Phil,
Glad to see you found this place/site. A lot of good folks, good info and a lot of "green-horn" types of questions that a fellow with your experience and wisdom will certainly be a welcome addition. Good to see another M&Mer. They wouldn't let me keep my horseb---z user name here.

Alright, checked the motor/transmission mounts and did not see anything out of the norm. Upon further inspection, the "lunging" starts right when the drive shaft engages the diff. Substantially more in N>D than N>R. Maybe just the nature of the beast.

Might want to look at the backlash in the ring and pinion. Chock the wheels, Put the truck in neutral, crawl under and see how far you can turn the driveshaft either direction before it stops. Let us know what you find............
