Just wondering why the speedo in my 96 f150 is bouncing all over the place when i drive.
My trannys acting up and i wonder if the speedo has anything to do with it.
So where does speedo pick up the speed from??
the tranny or the rear end?
either there is an issue with the trans or the cable on the speedo is messed up. ive had the same thing happen to me and i hit the gauge itself and it would fix itself
The OP's 1996 uses the signal from the sensor in the rear end. The speedometer/odometer is 100% electronic, no mechanical cable connection. The sensor is referred to as the VSS sensor. The output signal is routed to the RABS module then onto the PSOM where is it divided down to feed the speed/odometer and the Vehicle Speed input to the PCM.
Remove the VSS and inspect it. Many times it can be coated in debris from the rear axle. Sometimes it is the first sign of a rear axle problem. Try cleaning off the sensor before trying to replace it. As always it is a good idea to check for code before starting to tear things apart or spend money.
Unless someone downgraded your speed/odometer to a mechanical version your setup is the same as the Op's truck as well as my '92 F350. The VSS is on top of the rear axle. Assuming your truck is an F-series.
I have a '94 4x4 auto trans and I also have the sensor in the axle. I have replaced it recently also and it was not the cause of my speedo cutting out altogether/ jumping around, A very knowledgable user named (Subford) was kind enough to point me in the direction of the issue being an electronic part called the PSOM. hope this info helps you out.
