axle seals....not!!!

Help me, help me. I picked up a 75 f250 4 wheel drive last summer and have been having brake issues. found out that drs rear brakes were soaked. cleaned shoes and changed the oil seal in the drum. problem NOT solved. I went to do a full brake job after a front shoe came apart and when I got to the rears...drivers side still leaking. I took GREAT care to not bang up the new seal when I put the drum back on. spool looks and feels nice and smooth, seal looked fine. Any ideas??? I'm in the process of doing a complete brake job on the rear but do not understand why I'm still loosing gear oil past the seals.

If the sealing surface and the axle seal are fine, as you stated, then check the vent tube on the axle housing. It must be clear. Mud seems to find it's way into the rubber tube and/or the metal block that it attatches to on the axle shaft housing. Rust will also reside inside the metal block's tubes, blocking airflow. As the differential fluid heats up and expands, the air pressure must escape. If the rubber tube or the metal block is plugged, the air pressure will push the fluid out via your axle seals.

Remove the hose and block then clean them. A drill bit works great for cleaning the the block tubes, just replace the hose and piont it up towards the bed and secure it.

Did not even think of that one. The hose you speak of is a long one but I have use some serious air pressure at work. I'll let you know what happens. THANX SO MUCH!!!

Not sure what you meant by that last statement, but you are best removing the metal block nipple that threads into the axel and cleaning it out that way. Don't just try blowing air into the rubber vent hose pushing the debris into the axel.

Also, if that is the culprit, air often will not blow it out alone and you will need to stick a small nail, or drill bit throught the hole to clean it out. The actual hole is no where near the size of the rest of the nipple. It is much much smaller! So try to find the hole first, and then uses something the correct diameter for that very small hole.

I understand what you ment. the hole at the block in the diff is small, like torch tip cleaning rod size.

thanks much for the tip. The fiting was plugged so bad that I started to wonder if there really was a hole in it. Hope that takes care of the prob.

If your seal is good......I'm sure it will. Are you sure the brake wheel cylinder isnt leaking?
