My buddy just bought a 04 6 liter we just put a super chip on it went for a little run and it ran like a scaled dog for about 5 mins and then the water temp got hot on the freeway going about 110 and then when we exited it was already knocking not loud at first but after about 2 minutes the knock is louder and it is screeching no metal flakes on dipstick bit the starter is lugging trying to turn the motor over like a galded piston, the motor still starts n runs but screeching and knocking
The fan came on for like 5 seconds real loud when we were getting off the hiway when the motor overheated but it was all in less than 3 minutes and it started knocking sounds like a rod knock but with a screeching like a galded piston or something. It kind of sounds like it could be a belt squeeling but the motor has a lope to it now too we are going to check it out better tomorrow it still find but does not sound good at all
He seriously bought the truck, went straight to my house, we installed superchip, 5 minutes later it was knocking...
I would laugh and say that's a record but I watched a engine fire up on a dyno and grenade about 30 seconds later.
The fact that the starter is struggling suggests MAJOR internal damage. These starters create more than enough torque to turn through a seized bearing, dropped valves or any accessories. So my guess is that you punched/melted a piston.
Well look at the bright side: a new long block can be had for $4000
Out comes the motor! Went and checked it out took the fan belt off started it up still knocking. Turning motor over with wrench it has compression on all cylinders but has a real tight spot every other revolution it seems like a lifter or something valve train related does this make sense?
my buddy put a super chip on his to nothing but tranny problems after that. another buddy put on a super chip 50000 later and runs great. I guess its a roll of the dice
We have to pull the motor out no matter what. I will take pics of whatever is broken in there and post them here. It will be a few days. Chances are that a reman long block is in short order (I wonder if a short block has used or cheap lifters?)

Like Bis said check your oil filter housing/filter first. The valve train could be the cause of the miss but a struggle starter really does suggest something worse or you could have a weaker starter who knows. Either way, I think you're stuck pulling the motor and pulling it 100% apart. It'll be like the surprise on Christmas morning without the smiles. Hope your buddy has a lot of free cash laying around. But check the easy stuff first.
