Weight Distribution Question

I have a 06 F350 PSD SRW. Looking at getting a toy hauler. Never really towed heavy just utility trailers with quads. I really want a 5th wheel, but used prices on those are higher than i expected. I found a conventional pull for a decent price, when i contacted the seller he said i would need a weight distributing hitch. My question is if i put air bags under the back end, would i really need the distributing hitch? My thought is both give the same result just in different fashion.

Yes you need it! Not for the truck, It makes the trailer way nicer to haul, helps your steering (loads the front axle some) and believe it or not helps with sway. (My experiance anyhow!) O and a benefit you dont squat like a girl!

a weight distribution is required....it moves the pivot point farther back, witch takes less weight off the bumper. try it both ways and you will see that your bumper be much closer to ground than with a WDH. Most have provisions for sway bars.

Also if I am not mistaken the reciever (if 2") is only rated for like 6or 800#'s (not positive about this) without a weight dist hitch. Your truck is good to tag along tow alot but requires the proper weight hitch. Check your manual.
with a 2.5" reciever you are allowed,
Max tongue weight without a wdh is 800lbs of tongue weight,8000lbs trailer, I am sure the toyhauler is atleast that!
with wdh you are allowed 1500lbs tongue weight and 15000lbs of trailer!
2" reciever
600lbs tongue 6000lbs trailer
with wdh
1250tongue 12,500trailer.

yup, anything over 5K you need the distrubition setup. Helps put some of the wt up front too.

What are the numbers on the trailer?

Yes you need the WD you will find that it will take the rear end bounce out of towing. Without it every time you hit a bump it will exaggerate the bounce. Ford and all other manufactures require the use of a WD with a trailer weight of 5000# or greater. By not doing so it can leave you open to problems if you are in an accident.

The other way to consider this is that a weight distributing hitch could quite possibly save your life.

Without it, that's a lot of weight on the rear of your truck.

I used to deliver Raptors and such from the manufacturers to dealers using an F350 dually. There is no way I would have attempted to haul one without WD and I had Firestone Ride Rite air bags besides the dually wheels.

I would suggest the Reese Dual Cam WDH. Affordable and just as effective as the more expensive brands.
