Can there be codes without Check Engine Light on?

I don't have a check engine light on, but there's a problem with something in the engine.
Can there be codes or such that wouldn't turn the CEL on?

I'm considering ordering an edge insight cts this weekend. Would something like this be able to see these codes or notifications or what ever they are?
Thanks.

My SGII doesn't read my codes for whatever reason, but a good scanner should. I use an OLD diablo predator that does a great job of code scanning and some diagnostics. On the 03/04 trucks there are a LOT of codes that don't pop a CEL.

What do you use for a scanner? I tried again with my SG2 this morning--it showed nothing. Predator showed the two usual codes I always have, 3 EGR codes and a GPCM code (unexpected, kinda).

Thanks for the reps!!

My 05 had no CEL but had a turbo code. Ford ended up replacing the turbo. The truck also ran good. Just happened to check for codes with a new reader.

when I got my scangauge II i noticed the mpg was way off 1 mpg or 9999 mpg bouncing all over the place. call up scan gauge went through the setup with them. setup ok. they told me that they had a unit that was programmed more specific to my truck (03) got the new unit and things worked as advertised. you may want to ask them about it
