Another fuel milage thread.

i know, i know. another thread about fuel mileage. i have looked through the search, and could not find what i needed. i have an 01 350. it has a DP tuner that i run on 80 hp econ most of the time. auto trans. no lift but is on 305 65 R16 tires.

the reason i tell you this is that weather i run 65 or 70 all i can get for millage is 16 MPG. i hear of guys running up to 23 MPG.

the only thing i can find even remotely wrong is that the baro sensor reads 30 psi/ 4.75V that seams too high seeing as its only 14 psi out. other then that i have had suspicion of dirty pickup screen in the tank.

do you have any ideas why my mileage would be low?

I would say your doing great. The most I ever got was 17mpg and that was when it was new. I have the cat and was running between 65 and 80 on the highway thur Idaho to wyoming so altitude was up but my F350 dually, 4.10 ls, lb, 4x4 generally get 14 on highway and high 12's to L 13 city here in Calif. Hows the power out of that DP Tuner. I love mine and didn't hurt mpg at all. I'd say thats a deal. Chet

Take into conceridation that depending on where you live you have winter fuel right now 16mpg is about average. 15.9 is the best I've ever gotten outta my truck on summer fuels without a tuner and with my dp on 80economy and winter fuels at 65 mph I'm doing good to get 14 mpg hwy. Is your truck a standard cab long bed 2wd? I'm guessing not do you know if the trucks your trying to compare to are? You can read about my truck in my sig. Mileage doesn't change a lot at least not as much as most would think compared to a stock set up and a set up like mine

Your mileage isn't low. For those tires you're running, mileage is pretty decent.

And don't listen to the claims of 23 mpg's. A vast majority of those are questionable at best.

The two biggest things that will affect mileage are RPM's and aerodynamics. Anything else such as chips, intakes, exhaust, etc will have minimal to no impact on mileage.

On edit: I'm running a 6" lift and 36" tires. My mileage this winter has been averaging a little over 15 mpg's. During the summer I typically gain about 1 mpg.

Best i ever got running 285/75's was 18 on a 600 mile straight trip doing roughly 60. right now, in the winter, I've been averaging 9-10 with 315/75-16's. so don't feel so bad. Thats unloaded, no towing, no heavy foot, on 80e. And in the summer unless its a trip i get 14-15.

To my understanding of reading various threads, injectors would be the biggest increase in mpgs, though I have no experience with upgraded injectors it seems to me that those are the only things that will make a significant amount of mile per gallon increase. Better atomization and a helium filled right foot. Many miles down the road they would pay for themselves I think.

With your bigger tires don't forget to add in a few extra miles for the above stock tires...

Ive read a conversation about single shots. It came down to the only reason to upgrade to them would be if you needed a new set, for whatever reason. To do it when your injectors are in fine shape would be dumb due to the cost for them.
When mine go, im getting a set of single shots but not untill then.

I went this route. A little over 400 miles mixed city and highway I got 16.7 MPG. Changing the sticks gave 1 or 2 more mpg. What REALLY helps is the HPOP guage. I was driving on a flat stretch of road, cruise set 63 mph when a suv came up behind. The closer she got to me I could watch my pressure increase. Now it was a slight increase, but an increase none the less.

Hindsight being what it is....I should have spent the three grand on a beater 4 banger...Oh well, you live and learn! (hope the wife doesnt read this lol)

Ahh I see. I was just wondering if injectors were the secret, although 1 to 2 mpgs is significant in most cases when it comes to our trucks mods, probably if you did all the mods, including swapping the turbo for the gtp38r you would get 4 to 5 mpgs better. But be in the hole for about ten years. Oh well, just a theory I guess.

I did do all the mods at one time...I tore it down and did the up pipes, 38r, single shots, deleted the EPBV, harnesses, glow plugs..the whole nine yards. While my truck does indeed run better, it is not the performance I had hoped for( or read about)

I had the turbo and pipes on the shelf. I bought them a couple of years ago. But when all said and done close to 4 grand spent.

It's just a matter of time before diesel is back up to 5 bucks gallon, if not more. Lets just say I'm in the market for a small car. I won't sell my truck, they're a dime a dozen these days anyway, but I wont spend the money to commute in it thats for sure.

Bottom line...Save your money.

Duncan

I just drove from Columbia South Carolina to Destin Florida, 02 F350 crew longbed 4x4 stock tires 265/75R16 brand new, 3.73 rear, auto, did not turn on HVAC at all, no lift, Banks chip, and ran 70 MPH the whole way, 1900 to 2000 rpm's and 2 psi of turbo boost and I got exactly 18 MPG. Gassed up twice and filled it to the rim of the filler neck and hand calculated each time.
