Sloppy Steering Wheel

Ive tightend the allen head bolt about 1 1/2 turns already and it made it better but its still very sloppy. I can go from 11 to 1 o'clock and the tires dont move. Do I need a new steering box? I also have an idea to bull the bolt out all the way and drill a slight hole in the rod to give the bolt something to hold on tight to, what do you guys think?

I think it is time to call Harvey at Redhead Steering.I tried 2 boxes from Oreillys and they were both junk. Finally called Redhead(like I should have done from the start)and now I have zero slack.Truck drives plenty good.

Becareful on how far you set the allen screw in, as it will bind on the lobe that is in the gear box. Jack the front end up where both tires are off the ground and see if there is any loosness in the tie rods and ball Joints... ect.

Alright thanks I think I'll jack up the front first. How much does the red head box go for? I'm on my phone at school and it's a pain to look stuff up

Any input on drilling a small grove in the shaft where the bolt is? I e seen it done but I don't know how or if it would work on our trucks

Go with the redhead. Everybody seems to have good luck and tight boxed. One gentleman did get one that turned oppisite, meaning r went left and l went right but he sent it back and all was well. Check the steering where it meets the box for bolt up and make sure it tight to.

That gentleman was me.When I called Harvey after putting that backwards box in he knew right off what had happened.Apologized and sent me the right one.
They are a little pricey but worth it if your box is gone.As I said,I installed two boxes from Oreillys and came out with about the same result in my steering. The Redhead fixed the problem.

It is very easy to pick up alot of movement because of very little play in the steering components, so before you spend money on a new box make sure it will fix the problem by double and trile checking the steering components.

That shouldn't hurt anything long term if you get it out of there soon. I have read where people left it in with no issues but why push your luck?
