I have a 95 f-250 that just blew a head gasket with 240,000 4x4 automatic 5.8
I also have a 96 f-150 4x4 automatic 130,000 with a 5.0. the tranny needs rebuilt. I was told they were both e40d transmissions. Will the tranny swap off my 5.8 to my 5.0?
I don't think he'll need a new computer. The E4OD (if they both are) will be both the same, as i think he's intended to swap the 5.8 tranny into his 5.0. He would need a new ECU if he were swapping engines, as 5.8 =/= 5.0.
I'm with Encho on this one. The transmission swap does not require a computer change. 1995 and later E4ODs had a change in the solenoid pack design. Ford moved the circuit protection diodes to the PCM. The OP's swap is pretty much straight forward.
I do question how it will work if the F-150 has electronic shift 4x4. I recall somebody reported back there were differences in the transmission housing casting. I do not know the details, but it is something to be aware of.

This should not be an issue - swaps from electric shift to manual shift xfer cases are very common. I have done it myself on my Bronco and the manual BW1356 went right in place of the electric BW1356.
All I know is someone asked this kind of question a year or so ago. According to them there was some kind of issue. I do not recall the details. I found it strange, but I will take your word for it. You have been there, done that! Thanks
