best motor oil for my truck
#47
particular oil has been installed in any particular engine and the use & abuse the engine
has been subjected to.
Trying to blame sludge build-up exclusively on the brand of oil installed is both
irresponsible & invalid.

I am going to have to agree here with ctubutis...
There are many variables that contribute to an engine's cleanliness. We don't know how clean the engine was before the oil was used...how long it was installed for...what driving conditions or even dust conditions the engine was subjected to or even the state of the engine itself. The oil could actually be cleaning the sludge but the lack of maintenance could finally be breaking up.
For all we know, it just so happens that people who put in Quaker state oil do so when they feel their engine not performing well...thus the oil breaking up the built up sludge.
In all fairness...it's like me saying that Mobil 1 is the best but maybe I'm just changing the oil enough to never build up sludge and thus never letting the engine get dirty enough to eat itself alive.
Everything's relative...opinions, experience and advice. But then again...this is why we have forums...to express just those things...

Here's a great article: Oils Against Oils

the biggest dealbreaker for me when choosing motor oil is: is it on sale and does it come in a 5 qt container. I'll go with either 10W-30 or straight 30. I don't worry about the ZDDP thang at all, and every vehicle I have, two trucks and a Bronco all have flat tappet cams, not aggressive profiles but broken in, you know, 2500 rpm, carb primed, timing set, etc.
I still have problems with FL1As emptying out while sideways and getting some knock upon startup. not real happy about that. seems like if you let the truck sit for a few days or more it will empty out.
I use the 3000 mile oil change interval.

10W-40 is the recommended weight in my owners manual. After that, 10W-30. So maybe that's why? Although 5W-30 may be better in colder climates (if my understanding of multi-viscosity numbers is correct).
