best motor oil for my truck

i have a 1982 f100 with a 302, the truck was sitting for six years before i got it and ive had it for about 2 months, i havnt changed the oil in it yet because ive been putting all new gaskets, seals, exhaust and intake valves, valve lifters, push rods........... etc. when i get the motor all back together what would be the best oil for it, i live way out in the country in texas, so it dnt get too cold. i was thinkin lucus or royal purple, would one of these be good or is there something better?

I use semi synthetic 5w30

LARIAT 85 03-08-2011 08:13 PM

Motorcraft 10W30 synthetic blend motor oil with a Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter. :-X22

I'm partial to the Valvoline Max Life 10W30 synthetic blend with the motorcraft filter.

Why does the Autozone website tell me the FL-1A doesn't fit my 351W?

Fully Synth always provides better performance than non-synth or semi. But that call is entirely up to you. 5W30 or 10W30 are both great options, but since you live down here and dont really have to worry about cold, i would consider 0W30 oils. Any major brand is good.

The AutoZone website is incorrect if it says the FL-1A doesn't fit.

I would like to know what "performance gain" fully synthetic oil provides over a semi-synthetic or non-synthetic oil, Chief.

Is there something about the '85 351W 4V 2WD that's different? O'Reilly auto parts seems to skip this year also.

I'm confused.

I just checked Buy Motorcraft Parts Online | Official Motorcraft Auto Parts Site | FordParts.com., and it says to use a Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter for a 1985 F150 351W.

I have been using Castrol GTX 10W-30 with a shot of Lucas oil stabilizer, but I'll probably go with some sort of Max life (maybe the valvoline) next time. I like WIX filters.

Fordlover55 03-08-2011 09:22 PM

I'll toss a 2nd on the Valvoline, but I'd take a look at the mileage and use that as a deciding factor.

If the engine is being nearly completely rebuilt, I'd go with either a full synthetic or 50/50 blend. Valvoline is DEFINITELY a top grade oil. Some folks here will try to talk you into Mobile1, which is very expensive, but also top of the line for engine oils.

You do not NEED Royal Burple unless you plan on racing or revving the living daylights out of your engine. But, even at that, Valvoline or Mobile1 10w30 or even 10w40 after a break-in period. From the sounds of things, and my own experience in Texas temperatures, either one will be good, if you plan on driving like a sane person ... not that hotrodders are insane, by any means ... :-D

There's also an OIL forum, where you can read a half zillion posts on oils.... the good, the bad and the yoogly!! Rotsa ruck with yer choices.

I have used mobile 1 in both of my mercedes since day one. One has 180,000 and the other 110,000 with not a single engine issue and running super strong. Oil changes average around 10,000 miles. I beat the heck out of both, but more so the one with 180K.

Just bought the 85 the other day and had a quicky job done at jiffy lube, but once I start doing the changes on it I'll probably use mobile 1. It is expensive but I think with the extended oil changes it evens out if not cheaper in the end.

Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil and Filter. Can't beat it. Been using that in my truck since day one...actually I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles.

This is going to be one of those threads where people will always say that their particular brand is better...but the main thing to remember...constant oil changes. Other than that...pick your oil of choice (hint: Mobil 1 ;) )

Thanks!

I'll remove the Fram from my truck this weekend.

Just to add to the mix, I have always used Penzoil 10W40 and Motorcraft filter on my '86 F-150. Have the 302 as well and have always made out well, of course that is assuming that one regularly changes the oil and filter as should be done.
