[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Dec-02 AT 04:16 PM (EST)]:-X12 I own a 91 F-250 with a 5.8 and an E4OD. I am having a problem with the throttle. When I barely press on it or mash on it at a light racing an import, it chokes for a second and acts like it is going to die. It will then race to life. I have replaced the (TPS), (ECT) Sensor, new plugs, wire Cap and rotor. I've done about everything that I could think of to try to get it fixed. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kaleb
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Dec-02 AT 00:30 AM (EST)]I changed the fuel filter, but I didn't check the fuel system pressure. Also how do I check the fuel pressure? Please jog my memory. And as far as the codes go I haven't pulled them yet, just went down and got one of those cheap code scanners. I drove the truck again tonight, and when it dies it acts as if it isn't getting any fuel. It's almost like I have to pump the gas with a carburated engine. I have to turn it over about three times, and it will slowly come to life. Thanks for all Your help it is greatly appreciated
You put a fuel pressure gauge on the schrader valve on the fuel rail on top of the engine. It should hold steady at 35-40psi, peaking when you goose the throttle.
You don't need a scanner to pull EEC-IV codes; just a paperclip:

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Dec-02 AT 02:27 AM (EST)]I pulled codes, and just got a bunch of things that I have done to the truck show up, so I erased everything, and expected something else to come up after awhile, but nothing yet. Will let you know when I test the fuel pressure. Thanks again
Any idea where I could get a 3 inch lift, with long travel suspension?
I tested the Idle air control valve with an ohmmeter, and found positive continuity through it. No resistance what so ever. No parts stores carries this part anymore. I can only get it through a Ford dealership. Does anyone know where to get it on the web? or maybe a different part? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Any parts store in the country should have the IAC for a '91 Ford truck! That's one of the most common repair parts needed, and it's probably interchangeable with any Ford IAC from '84-2004.
Well I live in Boise Idaho, and I called around to all of the parts stores that we have here. They said that they carry the information in their computer, but they don't cary that part # anymore. The computer claims that it is not made anymore, and probably only could be found through a local ford dealership. The part run's at about 100 bucks
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Dec-02 AT 04:47 PM (EST)]Post the names of the parts stores you called, and I'll call the branches around here & find the PN & price.
With luck I found the only part. I found it at a wholesalers warehouse. It wasn't in the computer, but they had found one on the shelf hidden behind some other parts. With luck I got it. But it still didn't solve my problem. any other ideas?
OK So you've pretty much elimnated fuel & air, but you still need to check spark & compression (the 4 elements of gasoline engine combustion). Use a screw-in (not a press-seal) compression tester & follow the Haynes procedure for testing the ignition module & coil.
I like have a 93 F150XLT 302, I read many post on this site regarding my idle problems. I received many recommendations some which you have received. A friend recommended I start by getting all of the carbon build-up out of my system. I had concerns that it would not be that simple. IT WAS! He recommended a very strong BG producted used by the dealerships (added to my gas). Actually I bought a product sold at the auto parts stores called Z-MAX. It runs like a new truck. It would not stay running without my foot on the accelerator before. Just thought I'd offer that to concider.
My 90 E150 302 started bucking and surging and chocking and racing when it was less than 6 months old. Dealer cleaned the throttle body AND charged me 85 bucks.
Since then I have learned how to clean the throttle body myself and I do it every 4 months or so whether or not it needs it. Problem has not returned if I stick to preventative throttle body cleaning.
Remove the air box and any plumbing running into the air intake throttle body.
Get throttle body cleaner spray and or carburator spray and a tooh brush abd with the engine running spray almost th e whole can into the throttle body and scrub the butterfly atached to the gas pedal cable. Race the engine as you are spraying too.
PS while you have the air box out look at the air filter and breather and the air box itself with the air filter removed. If is is at all gummy or oily change the breather, air filter AND the PCV valve.
