Getting Off Google
Secondly, why should I have to bother turning it off in the first place? Don't come all up in my PC with your rollover stuff.
Bing reminds me of Sony. What's next... rootkits?

They will affect your webrowsing experience but are effective.

Then yahoo decided to clutter up their start page with a bunch of dumb crap, AND when someone hacked my email address that I'd had with them for 9 years and I tried to get some help....zilch. Called customer service and just kept getting sent in circles- one place would refer me to another place, that would refer me back to the first place. I'm still pissed about that.
I've been using gmail since then (2006) and I really like it a lot. I also like Google's clean search interface that doesn't have a ton of news and other BS all over it.

Ghostery;
"Ghostery sees the invisible web - tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons. Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity."
"Ghostery allows you to block scripts from companies that you don't trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and iframes. Ghostery puts your web privacy back in your hands."
Just a note; I do allow Internet Brands through the Ghostery filter but stop everyone else!
I also run Addblock plus;

Addblock plus demo video; YouTube - Adblock Plus in just over 1 Minute

Is it easy to turn on and off? Does it automatically block things after you set it up? Do you realize that things are blocked, or does it keep visible parts of the pages from loading? If you accidentally block something you didn't want to, is it easy to unblock?
It sets a button on the bottom of the page that allows you to access the options.
Try this link for their explanation of the service;
Ghostery - About
I find it easy to use.
It will list the tracking units and let you see who they are, where they come from and allow you to choose whether or not to stop that particular tracker.
It operates with point and click.
Cookies are controlled on a separate list.
Some sites I want to keep a cookie for. FTE comes to mind.
