recently bought a 1989 Bronco II and the engine is tapping loudly sounds valve train but is it anything to worry about. To be more descriptive of the sound it makes it sound like a diesel.
It sounds to me like the lifters are not pumping up. Most engines use hydraulic lifters and if they do not remain pumped up, or pump up with oil pressure ( however it is they work...dangit! )
In any case, my brother has one that rattles for what seems like forever, before they pump up and quiet down. I'd like to have it, matter of fact, it's so nice, body-wise and interior-wise, but those lifters would not only drive me nuts, but the wife would kill me for even THINKING about getting her the danged thing.
As for worrying about it, it's not good that it's running like that. The engine isn't running totally right, with bad lifters. Eventually, they'll totally collapse and then it won't want to run for very much longer. I'd get some advice about replacement costs.
Unless, of course, someone here has a great idea to MAYBE free them up. I'd even be interested in that advice.
I do not believe that they have adjustable rocker arms, to compensate. THAT, I can ask me brudder about.

Does the noise go away, or is it constant? If the noise is just on start up, it is a 2.9 thing. Ford says it is normal; I don't believe it. Is your oil cap milky? Cracked heads are notorious on the 2.9 engine. What I would do is change the oil, and add Marvel Mystery Oil. If anything will quiet lifters, it is Marvel Mystery Oil. Keep an eye on the oil for evidence of water in the oil. How many miles are on it? If the engine is worn out, I would opt for any upgrade to a different motor. The 2.9 is just not a good motor. I have been upkeeping mine for 10 years now. Cheers, have fun.

It is constant but everyonce in a while it goes away and runs very quiet but it taps most of the time even when warmed up. oil is clean no water at all but ill try to add a little marvel and see what happens. also it only has 112,000 miles unrebuilt. are there any other motors that will bolt in? I wanted to make a 300 fit lol but its way too long.
ok well i ran some marvel mystery oil in it today and the tapping is still there but it taps less often ill keep running it in there to see if it gets any better. also my oil pressure went up immediately after adding the mmo

You are probably close to needing a rebuild at 112K, if it is making noise. I think mine was at 120K, and was well tended to. Does it seem low on power when the noise occurs? I am sure others will disagree, but I would check in to a 3.0, 4.0, or 5.0 for engine options. I am not sure what the requirements will be to make them fit, but if I had it to do over again, that is the route I would take. Cheers.
A friend of mine with an '87 had that rapping, and he put some of this in his oil. It quieted it shortly, as it claims. I witnessed it with my own ears.

If the tapping is more than just on start up, there are probably other issues. The problem with the 2.9 isn't the lifters, it is the oiling system, and it goes down hill from there. Cheers.
this is no ****, run some hi octane gas, had an escort that sounded like an air hammer, tank of hi octane bout every 3rd or 4th fill-up kept it under control, then again gas wasnt 4 bucks a gallon back then. as for engine upgrades, from what i've learned in here is a 4.0 and below will fit, above that and ur lookin for tranny and transfer, mounts, exhaust, pretty much everything. engine upgrades require wire harness, comp, misc components that belong with the engine, read up on other peoples posts in here alot of info available
well thanks for the help the problem is solved hopefully. i ran mmo for 300 miles in the oil and then changed the oil. the tapping went down to just on start up when the engine is cold and so far today no tapping at all. i also noticed a major power boost. even if its a known bad motor ill just run it for all its got and then ill put an older carb motor in it of some sort.
