Hello, I have a '96 F-150 with the 4.9L with a 5 speed. 210xxx miles, never had any issues before yesterday. I was getting off the freeway, and was attempting to shift into 3rd, however it seems like something is blocking it. I also noticed that when in any gear except 1st, the stick moves significantly more than usual, as in, 5-6 inches to the left or right, as if it were in neutral. There is NO grinding, and I don't have any trouble getting into any gear except 3rd. I took it to a local garage and they said most likely it's bent shift forks. Any ideas? Is it still drive-able? And I'd like a rough estimate on how much it's going to run me for repair. Thanks.

Sounds like maybe the shifter is loose? First thing I would check. My 96 Ranger was pretty simple to get to. Once the cover is off you should be able to see where it connects to the trans. Of course I'm going off memory from a Ranger. The F150 could be a little different.
I am not a mechanic and no I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.
