smoking alternator

Have a 1993 F250 with a 351W. Went out this morning and she started up as usual. Next thing she stalls out and I notice a burning smell and smoke from under the hood. Pop the hood and start her again and see sparks and smoke coming from the alternator. Shut her down.

Alternator and pully assembly was hot. All the lights, etc. still work.

Wondering what is the cause? How big a job is it to replace the alternator.

Thanks,

Bill

It is very easy to replace. Take the belt off the pulley, remove the wires, unbolt it, bolt in new one, reconnect the wires, and put the belt back on. You're done.

i had mine catch on fire before, smelled horrible. The connector was bad and i guess couldnt hould on any longer and literally melted everything.

All you have to do is release the tensioner, take the belt off and there should be 2 bolts on the alternator. Take those loose as well as the connectors and take it up to get a new one for the parts store. Then installation is reversed! BUT i would fine the root cause of why this happened. Mine was from a broken and loose connecter and it got hot and melted everythin in the alternator.

Thanks for the reply. So it's not the alternator, but the pulley bearings?

What did you have do to fix this?

I wouldn't bother rebuilding it yourself, especially if you don't know what you're doing. It's only a few bucks more to get a reman'd alternator with your core.

And! Dont be like i did once please disconnect the neg. cable on the battery! Tell you what that brand new alternator will get burt out if you ground anything with a wrench. I know its the plug type connection, and not the wire nut but still just a habit. As far as rebuilding the alternator goes when the bearings go it might only be 20$ more for a rebuilt or even reman with a warrenty. Have fun installing it. Sounds like you got it. If your plug is very dirty think about getting a new one at a salvage yard or even parts store really. All the extra resistance will cause heat, and heat will melt them. seen it happen before to a friends. For a few cents more you can help prevent a new problem from occuring one morning or worse out on the road.

I'd suggest you replace the wiring harness pigtail (plug) as well, or you're just asking to have another fire.
This is a common problem with 2G alternators, and many remanufacturers will not warranty if you do not replace it.

Good time to replace your belt too. IMO Keep the old one for a spare but mark which side faces out for later use.
