Well I've had a squeaky belt for a while and the original culprit was the water pump leaking and the fan blowing the coolant onto the belt and causing the squeak. I changed the water pump and the tiny bypass hose between the thermostat and water pump. Still getting the embarrassing squeak. I hate the noise so much I keep a bottle of water and baby powder with me to coat the belt. But recently since the by pass hose was changed, the engine temp gauge rapidly goes to the A on Normal and then back down to the R or M. I'm afraid of blowing the head gasket as I don't have another car as backup or the money to sink into a a new head gasket if that happens. Could it just be a crappy belt? I replaced it back in July of last year when I bought the truck.
The things I've done so far in relation to this issue.
upper and lower rad hoses
water pump
bypass hose
belt
thermostat
The belt should be alright if you replaced it last year, have you noticed any more liquid on it since? Also try to spin a pulley off the belt, it might be loose (even a fraction of an inch). If the belt's loose just a bit it will squeal. I had that same problem and it turned out i needed a new tensioner arm.
Clean it with non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner. Spray the belt with the engine off, get as much of it as you can, spray the pulleys, too. Then, run the engine and spray as much of it as you can, again getting the pulleys as best you can. Just don't stick your hand (or anything else) into the fan.
No more leaks, but because I got a length of hose from FailZone, it's kinked a bit causing a small issue where the temp gauge goes up high and then goes down again. What is the hose that goes from the thermostat to the water pump called? I've had a heck of a time finding it. After that I'll see to getting a gatorback.
I'm sorry if none of this makes sense or has any relation to the title. I haven't had a week where everything works perfectly...
I have a squeaky belt.I've changed the tensioner, the alternator, two pulleys, replaced the belt twice, and used belt conditioner. I still have squeak. Could it possibly be the pulley from the power steering pump? When I spray it with water the squeak goes away but only temporarily.
I had the same problem both y'all having, I fixed mine by getting one of them gatorback belts before I put it on I sprayed some tal strip on the pulleys left It on there and then rinsed it off and let dry then putrid belt on the stripper took the coolant and belt dressing off and anything else that was on there.
Did you ever get it tensioned? Too loose or too tight belts will make noise that could go away with lubrication only to return once the lube is all gone.
